Story
It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man – loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst.

In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family, too. Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region, a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose.

Had me hooked
First Ann Cleeves book I have listened to. I enjoyed the TV series so thought I would give this a try. The story was captivating and I intended to only listen to it when I was traveling but instead listened at every available opportunity. Will look forward to my next Ann Cleeves book.

Ok
I love the Vera novels but struggled to get into this one for the main reason I didn’t really care about any of the characters and had difficulty remembering who was who at times. Also the setting was uninspiring compared to some of the other books. However, that being said it’s an ok listen with all the bits you expect from Vera.

So much better than tv adaptation!
l loved listening to this story! It was a little confusing at times as I had watched the TV program which varied quite a bit from the original. This was so much better!
The characters were so well developed, the plot had many twists & turns, and the outcome satisfying. Vera's attitude and rueful sense of humour are enjoyable and I enjoy hearing her thought processes, which of course we are not privy to on TV.
LOVED IT!!

Tried hard to finish it!
I tried very hard to finish this book, however found the over acting of the narrator for different characters extremely annoying... I gave up trying to finish and purchased another book.

Silent voices
I love Ann Cleeves and her books. Vera is terrific such a cranky woman with a lot of problems but solves crimes well.
The narrator Janine Burkett was really good. Changing her voice to fit with all characters.
Very enjoyable indeed.
