About this listen

Katsuk, a militant Native American student, has kidnapped 13-year-old David Marshall - the son of the US undersecretary of state. He and his young hostage flee into the deepest wilds of the Pacific Northwest, where they must work together to survive as teams of hunters try to track them. Even as he struggles to escape, David begins to feel a certain amount of respect for his captor. What the boy does not know, however, is that he has been chosen as an innocent from the white world for an ancient sacrifice of vengeance. And Katsuk may be divinely inspired - or simply insane.

This tale of vengeance and sacrifice touches upon many Native American myths even as it reveals various truths in its antihero.

Soul Catcher by Frank Herbert (the writer of Dune) is a very interesting story.

A native American Charlie learns of his sister's rape by a bunch of white men and her suicide. This lead to him planning ritualistic revenge against a white innocent and he kidnaps 13 year old boy David Marshall.

The rest of the story is journey of the kidnapper and the kidnapped as they journey through the rainy wilderness of the Pacific Northwest.

On the surface this is a solid thriller story as Frank Herbert keeps on the 2 characters and they go deeper into the wilderness, tensions inveitably rise.

Scott Brick's narration of the story is top notch. Highly recommended if you like a thriller story that explores the complex relationship of the Native Americans with the white people of America.

A moody philosophical thriller
