About this listen

Book 12 of the Tarzan series - special edition authorized by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Somewhere in the heart of Africa, a young archaeologist disappeared in the remote jungle mountains - Erich von Harben, son of an old missionary friend of Tarzan of the Apes. Now the ape-man seeks to rescue the lost scholar. The trail leads to a mysterious valley where Tarzan discovers two surviving outposts of ancient Rome, virtually unchanged by time. And there, Tarzan is thrust into the bloody gladiatorial arena, doomed to face every peril the cruel and corrupt emperor of Castra Sanguinarius can devise to ensure the ape-man’s death. Miles away in Castrum Mare, Erich von Harben also awaits execution upon the sands of another tyrant’s arena, destined to die before he can pledge his heart to the fair Favonia, daughter of one of the emperor’s favored patricians.

Tarzan and the Lost Empire, book 12 in the original Tarzan series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs follows the plot formula laid out in the previous book Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle.

The secondary hero of the story explores Africa discovering a lost civilization and Tarzan goes out to search for him and adventure ensues.

It is formulaic but an entertaining story. In the Lost Empire, Tarzan finds himself in the midst of two Roman colonies, extensions of the Roman Empire and still practising the customes and culture of the Roman Empire, completely cutoff from the outside world.

The Lost Empire is one of the most fun books in the Tarzan series yet. You have star crossed lovers, political intrigue but the highlight of the story is Tarzan forced to fight in bloody gladiatorial contests and leading a slave rebellion and even becoming ever so briefly, the ruler of one of the colonies. I mean this is just a fast paced entertaining story.

The audiobook is narrated by Ben Dooley who once does a good job and there is an informative afterword that goes into publishing background of the story.

The best way to enjoy the original Tarzan stories if you can spare the cash is to get your hands on the authorised editions published ERB Inc published in hardcover, Kindle and audiobook.
