Publisher's Summary

It has been 10 years since Jeanie Long was charged with the murder of 15-year-old Abigail Mantel. Now residents of the East Yorkshire village of Elvet are disturbed to hear of new evidence proving Jeanie’s innocence.

Abigail’s killer is still at large. For one young woman, Emma Bennett, the revelation brings back haunting memories of her vibrant best friend - and of that fearful winter's day when she had discovered her body lying cold in a ditch.

As Inspector Vera Stanhope makes fresh enquiries on the peninsula and villagers are hauled back to a time they hoped to forget, tensions begin to mount. But are people afraid of the killer or of their own guilty pasts?

Dreadful narration

Love Ann Cleeves books and have used Audible for years. For the first time ever I don’t know whether I can stick with listening a book.

The narrator would be suited to a period romance but is completely unsuited to a detective or mystery book. Everything sounds patronising. I find it very hard to feel interested in the story even though it is the ninth Ann Cleeves book I’ve listened to and I’ve been totally engrossed by the others.

I can’t judge the story yet and would have left the star rating blank but that isn’t allowed.

Engaging and skillful

Like other crime writers Ann Cleeves has her detective, Vera, but unlike many, her detective does not dominate the story. Vera is there as a central character but she does not dominate and is surrounded by other well crafted characters and plays only a part in the story. I do enjoy the TV versions of her work but these are only a shadow and do not do the books justice, as the character of Vera dominates.

Hard Work<br />

Story is good but the narration is bad. After the Shetland stories these Vera novels are not on the same level. Apart from the Vera voice every other voice is bad. Male voices always sound like they suffer learning difficulties, female voices drift from Petunia in the 1970's coastguard public information films to Mavis in Coronation Street in one sentence. All very distracting from what could be a good story.

The brilliant Vera Stanhope

This is my second audio book in the Vera Stanhope series. I have always watched the tv series. Which just makes Vera real in my mind. This story has held me from the beginning and could not stop myself from listening to it. Right to the second last chapter it twists and turns keeping you guessing. You will never guess. Can not wait until the next one.

Lay awake listening to it into the wee small hours. The tiredness the next day was worth it.

This Was One I Did Enjoy!

I always find the Vera stories enjoyable & I think that this was better read than the previous one, though it was the same reader. The characters weren’t interpreted in such an annoying & childish way.
Thank you. Ready for the next one!

Love Vera Stanhope

I had to concentrate in the beginning to sort out the characters, but after about 3/4 chapters I was hooked! Janine Birkett reads so well.
I certainly had the wrong person in mind for the crimes committed, that’s a sign of a good writer.
