About this listen

After losing her husband, writer Abigail Carson has all but given up on life. Having spent the last year cocooned in her Manhattan apartment, Abigail is suddenly forced to find a new home where she can stretch her dwindling savings. Intent on isolation, she moves to a tiny village in Nova Scotia where she'll have no one to interrupt her solitude.

Little does Abigail realize that small-town life offers far less privacy than the big city. With neighbors knocking on the door bearing homemade treats and invitations, Abby soon finds herself immersed in the lives of the people of South Haven. She forms an unlikely friendship with Liam Wright, the handyman renovating her dilapidated cottage, and his daughter, seven-year-old Olive.

As the dark cloud engulfing Abigail lifts, she starts to think she may have found love again. But just as Abigail is ready to leap, she discovers Liam carries with him a shocking secret that will ultimately cause everything to unravel. Abigail must decide if she will turn away from his pain or open her heart in the most hopeless of circumstances.

Contains mature themes.

A beautifully written story with heartfelt, relatable characters. Though it deals with grief and the loss of a partner—which initially made me hesitant to pick it up—it turned out to be deeply touching and warm. 💫

I absolutely adored little Olive 🩷—her cutesy charm and the sweet moments at school reminded me so much of my niece. 👧🎒 While it isn’t exactly a love story, it’s a wholesome family tale about healing, connection, and how the people we meet can change us in unexpected ways. 🌷

A gentle reminder that who we become is often shaped by the ones we choose to spend our time with. 💖

A tender and hopeful story of grief, healing, and second chances, The After Wife by Melanie Summers beautifully explores how love and community can pull us out of even the deepest sorrow.

Before diving into this one, I was honestly a bit skeptical—I'm not even sure why. But the moment I listened to the prologue, I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it... and I absolutely did!

The story follows Abigail, a romance writer navigating life after an immense loss. I found her character incredibly realistic and relatable. Her inner struggles, combined with her sharp wit and quiet strength, made her a protagonist I could truly root for. And the fact that she writes romance? That just added an extra layer of charm!

But the real scene-stealer for me was Olive. Without a doubt, she was my favorite character. With her innocence, curiosity, and the pure-hearted energy only a seven-year-old can bring, Olive was the emotional heart of the story. Every scene with her made me smile.

Liam’s character was also thoughtfully written, and his bond with both Abigail and Olive felt natural and warm. That said, the twist near the end caught me completely off guard—and not necessarily in a good way. Something about it didn’t quite sit right with me, though I can’t fully put my finger on why. Still, I appreciated how the story found a satisfying conclusion despite that bump in the road.

Overall, The After Wife turned out to be a cozy, moving, and uplifting read. If you enjoy small-town settings, heartfelt connections, and stories of emotional rebirth, this one’s worth picking up!
