Painfully artless, begs actual editing
This should be titled "Her Next Mister" or something equally trite. It is overlong, repetitive, and reads like a fourteen-year old quoting filler episodes of a high school drama. Simply put, it is poorly written and shoddily edited.
The premise is interesting: A group of six must sacrifice one of their number to gain admittance to a secret society. Sadly, the story consists almost exclusively of stilted dialogue: either childish "will they/won't they" exchanges or puerile sexual advances that make the characters sound like they've never had an actual adult conversation. I suppose this is less conspicuous to someone consuming this chapter by chapter, week by week. Hence, shame on the editor.
There is virtually no magic in this book. This would not be problem, except that it is part of the central conceit of the plot. Then again, in this book, virtually nothing happens. The entire story boils down to: There is a cast of laughably generic characters, who are occasionally in the same room, and the evil masterminds are tangentially related to them. The evil mastermind is bad, the other is not. That is all that happens.

I don't like it
I love fiction books describing various sorts of magic, dark academia, witches, alchemy, magical schools, etc. so I expected to love this one, but something is missing here (the magic?) The narration is terrible.

I don’t get the hype
Booktok (on the app TikTok) was raving about this book. But to be honest to was just ok. It wasn’t that kind of book I could not put down. It took some effort to keep on going back to it. The story it’s self wasn’t bad but it was a little slow. I liked the fact that each character had a different voice narrating and that the book was written in each main characters perspective. Each character saw the others in different ways, showing how we as people see each other in different ways. The concept of the universe they lived in was well thought out and created many opportunities to be creative with each character’s ability and potential to grow. All in all some chapters were better then others but there is not a part of this book that stands out so much that I would recommend it to others.

Multiple narrators does not work at all
In this instance the multiple narrators makes the story disjointed, there is no flow to the narration it is just too start stop to get any true enjoyment. It does not flow the way a radio play would, it plays like they had the different characters come in on different days to read their parts rather than act out the conversations together.

There’s a lot of hype around this and I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t just read a lot of books with deeply built and complexly structures worlds. The narrators are all alright, Libby’s is by far and away the best performance and Tristan’s the worst, but overall they’re disjointed and jarring. The story is interesting but the world is under built and under explained and the plot is slow.
Overall definitely greater than the sun of its parts, enjoyable on the whole but if you look closely at any one part it falls apart … having said that, for what it’s worth I don’t doubt I’ll read the sequel when it comes out, but I don’t think I’ll be recommending it to many people if that makes sense

Pretentious dark academia sorely needs an Editor
Many good ideas here none of which are properly expanded. The book is too pleased with itself to cut out the chaff or actually put events into motion meaning most of it is philosophical twaddle into the poor imagination and over fetishisation of actual academia that is synonymous with the Dark Academia genre. Characters spend too much time thinking and very little actually doing such that the stakes that are supposedly at stake simply don't manifest in a meaningful way. The lack of a proper Editor really shows: ultimately this book needed another ten minutes in the oven before being greenlit.

Unsatisfactory and tedious.
It started fairly well but by the middle of it started dragging just like the girl voicing Parisa. It didn’t end on a high either and I will not by interested to find what happens in the sequel. Another hyped title that fails to deliver.

Incredible Story!
Very well told! I particularly enjoyed the usage of multiple narrators to symbolise each character's thiughts and stories. Great plot, with lots of wonderful twists! I've already pre-ordered the sequel - can't wait!

All talk very little action
There’s an attempt for 3 dimensional characters but in all honesty it’s thrown away by the fact that this is just a book about 6+ people trying to have sex with each other, with the magic stuff and any character backstory being basically low level background noise.

Narrators kinda ruin the story
The narrator for Callum is just horrible. Half the time I couldn’t understand and had to replay just to try and catch what he was saying.
Too many narrators with no common accent for any character. Couldn’t finish it.

Magic only gets you so far
The idea is intriguing and it starts well with exceptional magicians invited to a secret society. I felt however that far too much was just interplay between the contestants which seemed to me to add little to the story; and not enough action. It certainly picked up again towards the end but overall for me each new magical power thrown into the mix removed all narrative tension as anything was potentially doable. Good performance, won't bother with the sequel.

Not worth the time
Terrible disjointed book. Storyline makes no sense. There is no plot in this book. The only things that actually happen go on at the very first and last chapters and you don’t ever get to spend time with any character long enough to care about them. The book also has dubious consent with some of the adult scenes and it’s said to be a queer book but that’s not the case at all. This book is a waste of your time and money.

Just couldn’t keep listening
I normally finish a book … always giving it the benefit of the doubt & hoping that the story will improve / the ending will be amazing … but I just can’t bring myself to listen to the rest of this . It’s boring & slow …and the storyline just doesn’t pull you in - and the way each sentence is written just seems overly complicated to me . The characters are not likeable either. I listen in the car & usually can’t wait to turn on my book …. Not this one . The reader tries really hard . Sorry Audible .

Painted a vivid picture in my imagination
Loved how each character had their own narrator, their own magical abilities and how a magical world integrated with a regular world. Some of the narration was confusing, switching between a character's spoken dialogue and the character's thoughts without much tonal change making it difficult to follow. Agree with others that Raina's voice was grating. About to read the second book - it seems like it should have just been 1 book instead of 2 separate. The first book stops in a really weird spot. Overall loved the writing and the narrators really painted a vivid picture in my mind of the magic and character's stories.

It’s twisty, turny and utterly tantalising
Well, this was not at all what I thought it would be. At first, what I assumed to be magical academia quickly became a rather involved entanglement of mystery intrigue and subplots.
I’m now hungry for the next book!

Great story and leaves you wanting more
I enjoyed the characters and the bombshell at the end. What was lacking was what was happening in the background, as weeks or months would pass and you had no idea what the characters were up to. I think if I had more of an inkling of what they were studying or discovering through their own abilities, it would have added more substance to what was going on. Will be happy to read/listen in the following book of what happens next to the story.

Amazing Narration to a great story.
I listened through this surprisingly quickly. the individual voices for each point of view really sets this apart as a high quality production. The story is enthralling and captivating, although the ending, the final chapter, feels a bit rushed with a lot of exposition. However that did not detract much from the overall story. Highly recommended, and I look forward to book 2.

Captivating characters and magic

Easy to binge and left me wanting a sequel. The best element of this book is the characters - self-absorbed, manipulative, and captivating. The author gives each a clear voice and leaves us to guess at their motivations and flaws and how this affects the web of relationships.
I listened to this as an audiobook, where each character perspective had a different voice actor. It’s a risky move as some actors’ characters had grating / annoying voices. Yet it gave another dimension to the character perspective - this is how this character perceives the others and finds them annoying.
My main complaint is the limited plot. It feels like the first act of a story, rather than the whole story. Time (and sequels) will tell whether it is worth investing in; as a beginning, I loved it.

Dubious
I listened through waiting for the major plot line and nothing eventuated and then I discover it’s part of an ongoing series. 12hrs of nothing. The voice of Raina reading the plants really grated on me. It’s put me off attempting future series. So much time invested and lost. Wish I’d read the reviews
