About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor, read by Andrew Scott and Asa Butterfield.

None of us ever agreed on the exact beginning.

Was it when we started drawing the chalk figures, or when they started to appear on their own?

Was it the terrible accident?

Or when they found the first body?

Critic Reviews

Wonderfully creepy - like a cold blade on the back of your neck (LEE CHILD)
The Chalk Man works, it's a lively and entertaining read . . . Tudor's got talent
This assured debut is very much in the Stephen King vein - creepy with plenty of menace
Hot damn C. J. Tudor's The Chalk Man is good. Very Stephen King-esque (Ruth Ware)
CJ Tudor's very clever, wrong-footing debut will leave you checking that doors and windows of your holiday cottage are secure . . .
A striking debut
A tense gripper with a leave-the-lights-on shock ending
You'll be gripped by this cracking debut novel . . . it will keep you up all night with all the lights on. This intriguing, satisfying thriller delivers a series of shocks . . . reminiscent of the master of horror Stephen King

Why does the narrator, who plays the adult part, always whisper? Even when there is no need. Major irritation. Why did he speak so low? Does he think he's good? He goes slow in one moment and loud in another. Spoiled the whole book for me. Waste of money. Only because of the narrator.

Nice book

The story is pretty solid. The narrator for younger Ed’s character is also pretty good.

The only gripe is with the narrator for the adult Ed (Asa Butterfield, if I am not wrong) - He should have SPOKEN UP instead of mumbling most of the way!!! Pretty irritating.

Excellent Story, but VERY POOR narrator

Loved the book. However, the narration did by the narrator doing adult Eddie needed to be much clearer. It is quite hard to understand at times.

Asa Butterfield made this hard to listen to. I could barely hear what he was mumbling

Good story, Should've had better narration
