Publisher's Summary
Pope Gregory XVII has spent a lifetime quietly serving the church he loves - until he announces a prophecy so alarming that it threatens to tear the Vatican apart. Terrified, the Vatican cardinals imprison him in a monastery. Is he mad, as they believe, or is it all an elaborate plot? An old friend of the pope sets out on a risky quest to find out. On the way, he discovers the power of love and faith, while terrorists and politicians use every deadly and unholy means to stop him.
The Clowns of God spent 22 weeks on the New York Times best seller list and is the second novel in Morris West’s Vatican trilogy.
Critic Reviews
"West is a skilful storyteller who knows how to build suspense into every twist of the plot." (Christian Science Monitor)
"Few writers of best-selling fiction have brought to the popular novel such acute intelligence and ethical perception." (The Australian)

Even better now
Enjoyed it more this time than when I first read it in the 1980s! Had almost forgotten how great a writer Morris West was!

Well written (and read) and enjoyable book . Very thought provoking and for me ( retired priest) spiritually uplifting .
What a gripping story. So true to our modern fears and hopes about a world ‘out of control’ though manipulated by powerful and usually unseen interests.
Excitingly prophetic of what may happen when the ‘silent and malevolent powers’ take control
Can’t wait to read the other two books in Morris West’s trilogy

A moving and engaging narrative interpretation
The books of Morris West have always captivated me and I now enjoy listening to them on Audible. James Wright's intelligent, dignified voice, his ability to interpret a character and move the story to a satisfying finale, is unequalled.
If only he could reinterpret the other Morris West novels currently available on Audible.
Extraordinary story-telling.
