The Coral Tree
This is the story of a fleeting moment of friendship between the narrator and a little girl. The author, who is in his mid-twenties, is going to England for a better life, leaving his grandfather’s bungalow and all the memories behind. While the author waits for his tonga to take him to the railway station, a little girl comes at his verandah to fetch some flowers from the nearby coral tree. The author helps her get them and talk a bit about their lives, and the two become friends. Soon the tonga arrives and takes the author away. While leaving his ancestral place forever, the author realizes, looking at the little girl waving at her with the coral flowers he got her, that his heart has got just heavier.
