Story
It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man – loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst.

Story
In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family, too. Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region, a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose.

Story
At first, it seems an ordinary house in an upscale part of Boston. Lawn, white picket fence, car out front, front door opened just a crack.... Inside a man lies dead. Crimson splatters over the walls, pools on the floor. And on the stairs, a young woman waits. Covered in blood, she is holding a gun. An open-and shut-case, Detective DD Warren thinks when she arrives at the house, particularly as when she last saw the suspect, Evie, she had just shot her own father. That time the killing had been an accident. This time it seems horribly intentional. But is it?

Publisher's Summary
Three very different women come together at isolated Baikie’s Cottage on the North Pennines to complete an environmental survey.
Rachael, the team leader, is still reeling after a double betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Anne, a botanist, sees the survey as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman hiding plenty of her own secrets.
Rachael is the first to arrive at the cottage, where she discovers the body of her friend, Bella Furness. Bella, it appears, has committed suicide - a verdict Rachael refuses to accept.
When another death occurs, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope enters the picture....

Pleasant surprise
Great story and good clear narration. I have seen some of the tv episodes about Vera Stanhope and they are fine but I enjoyed the book more.

Goes on a bit too much
This book did not have me gripped. There was a little too much ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’. The characters were somewhat on the dull side. The story is okay, but could use a serious amount of editing. There is not enough plot or character development and I struggled to keep concentrating.

Excellent story as always from Ann Cleeves
Ann Cleeves is always brilliant at weaving together a plot and I didn’t guess the murderer.
As often happens the overall rating is let down by the reader. Although the voice of Vera was okay, the voices of all the other female characters sounded like five year olds. Fortunately, Ann Cleeves’ descriptions and dialogues gave me a sense of their true characters.

Irritating narrator
I can't help thinking that a better narrator might have made this story easier to follow or even believable.

Long Winded and Boring
I was very bored for at least two thirds of this book but kept going because Ann Cleeves is a well respected authoress and this was my first book of hers. The final third got a lot better and I was drawn to it, until the ending which was weak and poor. The writing is detailed which was good, but it was all too long winded and dull.

Boring. Dreadful Narration.
The lead in to the main landscape of the story was far too long, and incredible tedious. The Narrator would be more suited to a childrens' book. I stuck with it, but it was a credit wasted.

The Crow Trap, Loved The Book, But Not The Reader!
I enjoyed the book, though as I wasn’t well, I listened to it twice, straight off, to ensure that I caught the whole tale. I was annoyed, to say the least, with the reader, many of the cast appearing to be under 5 & whinging children!
As it happens, I also watched the TV film, which I love, especially Vera, but much of the plot & cast were missing.
I am now looking forward to the next one!

Excellent!
Really enjoyed this book and it kept me guessing until the end. Already bought the next one in the series. I thought the narrator was fine (other reviews commented negatively on this) and I would listen to other books read by the same lady.

Be prepared to pay attention
A very convoluted and difficult story to follow. So many characters to remember. The first half of the book is dull, but gives background to the story. The second half, when Vera comes along, is more interesting. I love the TV show, but won't listen to any more of these novels.

Will try again
A good story, but annoying that there was only an off handed remark, when Vera was reminiscing about a case when she was a young WPC, that linked the murders. Are all her books like this? I'll give her another go to find out. Lovely narration.
