Publisher's Summary

From sex trafficking and fraud to government secrets and anonymous hacking groups, this definitive exploration and exposé of the dark web goes where no documentary has gone before.

The anonymous and lawless online environment of the Dark Web makes headlines on a daily basis. It touches all of our lives, without our knowledge, in many different ways. But where do the myths end and reality begin?

Tech writer and broadcaster Geoff White (Channel 4 News) wants to find out. He casts an investigatory light on the dark underworld of the internet. We join him on a shocking tour of its secrets, revealing corporate hackers, paedophile rings, fraud on an international scale, conspiracy theories, drug dealers, gun runners, spies and specialist police investigators.

Driven by undercover recordings, anonymous contributors and expert interviews, this in-depth, journalistically-rigorous current affairs investigation leaves no online stone unturned in its quest for the truth.

Introductory content

Great narration.. Finished this book really fast without feeling tired or monotony setting in.

Content.. Is basically an introduction to the dark web along with related aspects like birth of bitcoin, it's perils, various Spyware, their effect on businesses across the worked, to mention a few.

If you are looking to understand the basics of dark web, then go for it.

Very informative for a person who doesn't know anything about the real world of internet because what a normal web user is surfing, is just a tip of a iceberg.

Misleading Title

I picked up this book to understand the way dark web can be accessed, the way it works and have an insight in its use. But this book is all about the effects of dark web on society, what all malicious activities are carried out on dark web.

it was not what I was looking for.

Informative

The episodes are short and informative. It casts some light of the shadowy dark side of internet, helps remove the smoke and hype surrounding it. The book discusses some of the moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding the usage of dark web and contains interactions with people who have been on various sides of the web.

I have to say this wasn't 1st on my list to read, but I finally came back to it as I had a great curiosity re: the dark web. As another reviewer stated, I dont know why I waited so long to read this because its pretty mind blowing! I'm starting chapter 3 right now and its 1:45 am....I orginally started this thinking I would put in my earbuds and go to sleep before midnight.....
well, as it turned out...the author goes into great factual detail. So, my mind got too excited!! Sometimes you come across a non-fiction book that really grabs your attention, and 'The Dark Web' definitely falls into that category.
I turned the light back on, got out my sketchbook, and proceeded to learn a LOT about this subject. I AM going to make myself turn it off after the next chapter, but I can't resist to listen to one more!!
One last comment ~I've always been curious about this subject but would never Google it for fear of the unknown possibilities: viruses, laptop death, phone blowing up, being 'sucked in to the dark side'... ;)
After learning even the small amount from the 1st few chapters.....wow..there are normal people that have gone on there and have done so multiple times, even making purchases and have done no harm to anyone or anything. Case closed. I don't want to spoil anything in the book...I just was amazed about the different things that happened to be out there. (obviously, there are very DARK things out there). I hope you enjoy learning about this subject as much as I am!

Informative

It is presented as a "podcast " or audio/radio show covering different topics about the Dark Web. I was totally unaware this existed so it's been quite fascinating to listen to this work.

Eye opening

I, like other people I know, know about the dark web and that there are really disturbing thing that go on there. This helped me understand some of the behind the scenes that goes on in the dark web. It was very interesting to hear different opinions and stories about the dark web and it was very easy to follow along and get lost in the book.

Naive

Subjects interviewed are not experts that use the dark web, they're researchers trying to study it.

Ignore this publication, a 10 minute YouTube video has the same content in a shorter period of time. This is slow and boring with little to no primary sources of people who actually use the Dark Web.

It consists mostly of how the UK government wants to revoke privacy rights and paints privacy as evil while also sounding like ignorant parents unable to understand technology.

Fascinating history

I have a computer science background and whilst I had a passing understanding of technologies like Tor and bitcoin, the history of the technology was new to me and very well presented. The Silk Road saga typically takes all the headlines so was grateful to get a broader picture of what's really going on across the so called "dark web". Unsurprisingly there's plenty of murky goings-on if you know where to look, but it manages not to get too think-of-the-children overly dramatic despite lengthy focus on the shadier topics typically associated with the dark web.

Episodes rattle along at a nice pace. Being a geek I wouldn't have minded a little more detail of the underlying tech, but I expect I'm the minority!

A fascinating show and leant far more than I expected.

A good hack of my time!

This is, as with most explorations into the dark side of humanity, poses the age old question: is it the tool that is bad or the person using it? I for one really enjoyed listening to this & was quite surprised by much of what I heard but it's at the end, where the narrator poses the question of whether in the future we'll all be surfing the net anonymously due to a percieved 'threat' to our privacy, that really got to me.

I would highly recommend this to those who already know alot about the Dark Web as well as those just looking for an entertaining listen.

Not balanced

Started off quite promisingly, but descended into "look how bad all these people are doing illegal things" and ended with a boring panel session, rather than a look ahead at where the Dark Web could be going.

Good for an introduction to the basic facets

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Audio quality was somewhat poor, especially in certain interviews. I'd describe it as mobile-phone grade recording. Overall, I felt it was a good first introduction to the issues hosted on the Dark Web. However, it is also highly sensationalised, which is somewhat ironic considering episode 9 features an interview about whistleblowing which details how people are less likely to approach journalists who simply write "DARK WEB BAD!", which is almost exactly what is happening in this series. I would recommend the series to those wanting an overview of the negative aspects of the Dark Web, but if you want more technical information and a balanced view of the non-insidious activities which take place, look elsewhere.

An insightful 10-part documentary 5*

An insightful 10-part documentary by Technology journalist, Geoff White (Channel 4 News).

I learnt a lot.

1. The birth of the dark web
2. The untold story of the dark web
3. Bitcoin’s days are numbered
4. How not to buy a gun on the dark web
5. Hackers for hire
6. The virus kingpin
7. Cyber crime Inc.
8. The child porn paradox
9. A dark force for good
10. Anonymity on trial

Found everything brilliant except part 10 (34 minutes); a group of knowledgeable people discuss anonymity and the dark web. Compared to what preceded it, this episode was rather dull.

A great introductory series into the dark web

This show takes you right to the start of how the dark web was born, and how it's changed and where it is today. The show features interviews that provide lots of information without feeling academic. It is well produced and goes at a pace that leaves you both entertained and informed. Amazing insight into the other side

Delving into the dark web is not as easy nor wise thing to endeavour, as a early teen I once did so myself with the help of classmates and I regret my experience. But to hear the other side of the famous cases and to learn more about the massive underground yet online world is both fascinating and exhilarating.
