Publisher's Summary
A pioneering physician reveals how childhood stress leads to lifelong health problems and what we can do to break the cycle.
A pioneer in the field of medicine, TED Talk speaker and subject of a New Yorker profile, Dr Nadine Burke Harris is leading a movement to transform the way we respond to the public health crisis of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress that dramatically impacts our health and longevity. By revealing the science behind childhood adversity, this audiobook offers a new way of understanding the adverse events that affect us throughout our lifetime. Based on her own groundbreaking clinical work and public leadership, Burke Harris shows us how we can disrupt this cycle through interventions that help retrain the brain and body, foster resilience, and help children, families, and adults live healthier, happier lives.
Like the classic Silent Spring, this audiobook helps listeners see a problem hiding in plain sight that impacts us all. By looking at the widespread crisis of childhood adversity through the objective lens of science and medicine, this book provides a road map for deeper understanding and change.

Whistle blower
After an impressive TED talk Dr Nadine couldn't take it to another level through this book. After suffering for above 40 years due to ACE's looking at the title was very excited I found a solution.

Wow. Everyone should read this.....
.... It could change the world! Brilliantly and passionately read by the author herself, I couldn't stop listening! It was so engaging and at times deeply moving.
This isn't a book just for doctors or therapists, it should (at least) be read by teachers, social care workers, police officers and all those other areas were people work to help people. But the real message is that we're a community... A human community and knowing the contents of this book might just help us all change the legacy for the children to come.
Read it! You won't regret it.

Amazing is not enough
Loved this book, the very essence of the Resilience film made with Sundance. A worthy listen for everyone interacting with children and young people either as a parent, relative, teacher, youth worker, social worker, children's panel member, residential managers, police officers, doctors, nurses, paramedics. If you cross paths with children and young people this book is an absolute must, gaining an understanding of the full picture of adversity. I hope to hear much more from this author, researcher, doctor and visionary... its the tip of an enormous iceberg!

good book, good performance
this is one of the very good examples of the author narrating her own book, as the author has a really good sense of humor and is very compassionate, and the intended emotions were very accurately delivered through her performance, so much so that i felt moved to leave a comment of gratitude. well done. also really like the writing. thought this was going to be a more therapy type book, and instead there was a lot of neurobiological information in there. very clearly and concisely explained. as a chemist, this book successfully got me interested in biology and neuroscience. wish i had a professor like this during college.

Nadine Burke-Harris is a pioneer and groundbreaker
This book is such a blessing. So helpful. I have dipped in and out of it in paperback form for years but not until I listened to the whole book on Audible did I get the significance of this wonderful woman’s part in the process of getting ACE’s recognised on so many levels. Brilliant performance by Nadine in the audio too. If you listen to, or read, this book you’ll feel so much more informed, whatever you do in life. Thank you.
