About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The instant New York Times bestseller, January 2024, and Sunday Times bestseller, February 2024

Totally original and utterly compelling, with a voice all of its own, this is the outstanding new thriller from the no.1 internationally bestselling author of The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides.

This is a tale of murder.
Or maybe that's not quite true. At its heart, it's a love story, isn't it?

One spring morning, reclusive ex-movie star Lana Farrar invites a small group of her closest friends for a weekend away, on her small private island, just off the coast of Mykonos.

Beneath the surface, old friendships conceal violent passions and resentments. And in forty-eight hours, one of them will be dead.

But that was just the beginning...

You may think you know this story. Think again.

Critic Reviews

Gloriously atmospheric and utterly riveting, this is my favourite Alex Michaelides yet. Readers you are in for a treat! But then what else would you expect from the undisputed master of the twist? (Lucy Foley)
Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story structure presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. For fans of erudite, locked room mysteries told with style and theatrical panache, The Fury will deliver, on all counts (David Baldacci)
You'll think you know where it's going and you couldn't be more wrong (Linwood Barclay)
The Fury by Alex Michaelides is a proper, grown-up thriller that exudes class from every page. So much more than a murder mystery, every twist and turn is simultaneously a total surprise and completely inevitable. The writing is perfectly sparse, yet cloaks a narrative of rare complexity. So many contradictions, yet all unite in a devastating whole. The Fury is a very special book and highly recommended (Janice Hallett)
This is a masterclass in suspense. A unique and captivating narrator takes you on a journey filled with twists and finely drawn characters you will treasure. This is probably his best book. Not to be missed (Steve Cavanagh)
A glorious triumph - just brilliant (Stephen Fry)
Audacious, twisty, compelling, and full of the joyous verve that one only finds in the very best storytelling, this is the best novel yet from Alex Michaelides (Sophie Hannah)
Mesmerising - a beguiling labyrinth of twists and surprises, even better than The Silent Patient. The Fury is The Magus meets The Secret History on a Greek island paradise where nothing is as it seems, and Alex Michaelides is a master magician, skilfully misdirecting the reader at every turn (JP Delaney)
The Fury is a masterfully woven story of Shakespearean twists and Machiavellian turns. A Greek Tragedy in the guise of a postmodern thriller. Do not miss this one. (Holly Jackson)
A classic, twisting, brilliant murder mystery. A wonderfully drawn cast of characters with a motive to kill for, in a location to die for, keep you guessing until the shocking finale. Clever, and fiendishly fun (Chris Whitaker)

Fairly Disappointed

Having read The Silent Patient and Maidens, I had high hopes for this one too, especially because the plot kind of seemed inspired from an Agatha Christie Novel; a group of people on a deserted island and one of them is murdered, and everyone had a motive and is a suspect blaming the other person. To be honest it was a mix between ‘And then there were none’ and ‘Glass Onion: A Knives out Mystery’. But unlike them, there were way too many plot twists that just kind of kept jumping back and forth and the climax was not worth it. It had the potential to be much better. The Narrator spends way too much time setting the scenes and context which just don’t really seem necessary and the wait did not pay off.

Good one

"And we all love a good listener, don’t we? God knows, we spend our whole lives not being heard."

After blowing minds worldwide with 'The Silent Patient', Alex Michaelides is back with his third novel, and boy is it something different. I absolutely adore that book and I jumped into The Fury with so much excitement.

The story is about a select group of friends being invited by former movie star Lana Farrar, for a retreat on a private Greek island. One of them is murdered on the island, and there has been no intruder on the island. The psychological thriller explores not the whodunnit but whydunnit.

What I absolutely adore about this book -
It is the writing. Brilliant narration, quote-worthy dialogue and an unreliable narrator that talks to us. The conversational style makes the book much more personal as if we're on the island with this group, or as if the narrator is actually telling us the entire plot while seated in a bar, or like watching a movie! I enjoyed the setting, the storyline and how each and every single one of the five acts had a unique twist. The short chapters kept me turning pages.

What bothered me was the slow pace for a thriller and the redundancy of events, a bit of filler like a whole chapter about what this story would have been like, had it been an Agatha Christie novel. That's cool in a way, though. See, I had mixed feelings about the book, which had me take more than two weeks after I finished the novel, to write this review.

It didn't have my desired pace but yes, it's still a worthy read, for the love of brilliant and gripping narration. Packed with a curious storyline, impulsive characters, twists after twists and a mind-blowing discovery at the ending. Definitely unputdownable. Oh and the audible Audiobook is praise-worthy.
