Publisher's Summary

"The Ghost Pirates" is a powerful account of a doomed and haunted ship on its last voyage, and of the terrible sea-devils (of quasi-human aspect, and perhaps the spirits of bygone buccaneers) that besiege it and finally drag it down to an unknown fate. With its command of maritime knowledge, and its clever selection of hints and incidents suggestive of latent horrors in nature, this book at times reaches enviable peaks of power.

Goose-Bunp Giving,, Inexplicable Sea Story!

YUMMY! Not an effort to " explain away" the actions described but wonderfulness in accepting what happens/happened without trying to explain it away or pretend it did,'nt happen exactly as experienced! {Why is this considered an "eerie ghost story in a sea setting" rather than being remarkable and chilling in it's own right?)

Enjoyable old style yarn!!

Actually really enjoyed this book, Ghost Pirates. Though it’s about ghosts and not specifically pirates. I picked it up simply because the cover with a ship and masts caught my eye. The reading and tale styles are in keeping with the more subdued styles of the late 1800s when it was written. But I found it more engaging because it wasn’t overly dramatic. Overall I really liked it.

fantastic supernatural maritime story

Just a really great horror story that takes place on a merchant vessel. The way Hodgson built up suspense in this story was terrific. The characters aren't very distinct or fleshed out but that's what you would expect from a story this short.

Luke Cardy does a good job with the narration (how he can say poop so many times without giggling like a child is in itself quite the feat) I just sort of wish they would have gone with a British narrator instead as his imitation of a cockney accent leaves a bit to be desired.

Overall definitely a forgotten classic that deserves your attention!

Aaaaaarrrrrrrr

If you like sea stories this one is for you. A passable knowledge of nautical terms helps but not overly needed

Story is full of nautical sailing terms

alot of the action happened up in the sails . As a land lubber, Im not familiar with all the ship references.

A spooky salty sea yarn indeed

A great reading of one of the greats of nautical haunting.
The reader is spot on and his performance is pitch perfect for this tale of ghostly goings on at sea.
It’s a ripping yarn and a highly recommended tale, written by sailor and master of weird fiction W.H.Hodgson.
Seek out House On The Borderland by the same author next for a creepy double bill of odd but brilliant tales.
