Publisher's Summary

From the bestselling author of Wives of War comes a harrowing tale of four brave young nurses whose lives change forever in the wake of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

When Grace, April, and Poppy join the US Army Nurse Corps, they see it as little more than an adventure, one made all the better by their first station: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Joined at the hip, idealistic Grace, exuberant Poppy, and brave but haunted April frolic in the sun, attending parties, flirting with the handsome soldiers, and becoming fast friends with seasoned nurse Eva. Like the Hawaiian sun, their future seems warm and bright - until the infamous morning of December 7.

Within just a few horrifying hours, their sparkling hopes turn to black rubble and ash. Now embroiled in a war they never could have imagined, they must decide what truly matters to them and face grief as they never have before. Death may await them - but so do hope and purpose. In the midst of the carnage, can they find happiness and learn to fight not just for their country’s honor but for themselves?

doesn't fit history

could have been a five star if had been true to the period. liked the characters but the dialog and circumstances were not true to WW2 military nurses. these 3 lower ranked nurses had way too much free time and behavior and language just didn't match the various nonfiction accounts I have read about the period. I did enjoy the storyline and various characters but kept going wait a minute how could they have done that?

DREADFUL BOOK

what a horrible book. A complete waste of a credit. Within the first chapter I hated the breathy narrator and tried to return it but audible said it wasn’t eligible for return. The sentence structure is disjointed at best. It should be marketed as young teen because the content and grammar are so childish.

The narrator is simply dreadful. So bad, that I have written down her name so I never purchase another book with her narrating. Breathy and very bad pacing of dialogue. Her portrayal sounds like she is dealing with 12 year olds.

The story line jumps from topic to topic, winding with no destination.

Do NOT waste your credit on this horrible book.

What an amazing walk thru WWII from the women’s side

I loved every moment of this amazing historical fiction. Pearl Harbor was such a dramatic tragic event in our history. Your research in clothing, hairstyles, historical events was spot on. It was fascinating, I had to listen to The Spitfire Girls by the same author.

Highly Disapointed

Cute story line. Not at all what I was expecting. Boring! What should have taken a few hours, took me weeks to complete. I thought it would get better but it never did. It was painful to get through!

Predictably corny

I was not at all impressed with the writing style of this story or the narration of it. The combination of the two was at times too much to take at times. The story line was to predictable to the point of being corny. And when the the narrator tried to portray the emotions of the character and the dialogue literally had me rolling my eyes at times.

Excellent in depth characters. true reactions to the horrors of war and loss of loved ones. A different prospective of courageous survival and honor.

Girls of Pearl Harbour

Enjoyed the story, but to keep calling the ships boats would send navy people crazy .

The British accent attempts weren’t great but it was an enjoyable listen which far out weighted those annoyances

The nurses of Pearl Harbour & WWII certainly were brave and need acknowledgement

Worthy to be listened to

Performance vs. writing

Narrator excellent at voices of characters...occasionally a little stilted but wonder if that was story line related. Several places way too many "she said", "he said". Overall enjoyed every minute. Usually save audible for long rides or waiting room time but had to see what was happening so would listen while preparing supper or sitting with family watching TV using ear bud!

I enjoyed the story of The girls of Pearl

Another fabulous story by Ms Lane!

I absolutely loved this story by Ms Lane. The characters are all deeply developed. No cardboard cutouts here. Her writing style is so smooth and engaging.
The narrator let Ms Lane down however. I almost stopped listening due to the narrator making it sound like a cartoon at times. Her so called British accent is atrocious. But Ms Lane's storytelling ability kept me listening all the way to the end.
I'm looking forward to her next book. I just hope the publisher chooses the narrator more carefully next time.
