Very twisty
I really enjoyed this book. The story moved quickly and benefited from the shifting narrators throughout. Some of the story's twists were foreseeable, but many of them were not. Every aspect of the plot was tied up by the end, which was satisfying. I binged this in two days and kept finding opportunities to listen. I am not usually a fan of unreliable narrators, but thought it worked really well here.

DISAPPOINTING. OKAY. DISAPPOINTING.
Excellent narrators. The first one-fourth of this audiobook is slow and unrealistic, but the middle of the audiobook is quite good. Unfortunately, the last fourth of the book is both predictable and back to unrealistic again. Worst of all, it leaves the story unfinished but not even interesting enough that the listener cares.

Weird and long
This story dragged from the start. I am not a fan of Gone Girl so those who are might find this book to their liking. I personally found the characters creepy and non credible. Not my cup of tea.

Grabs you from the start
An interestingly dark listen! You NEVER know what’s about to happen with the characters. Hooks you in the first 2 minutes and never lets go. I had problems finding a place to stop. I would get back from a trip to the grocery and sit in my car still listening. Bravo on a great and unpredictable ending, though I think the epilogue wasn’t really needed, it wasn’t unnecessary. You’ll enjoy this one for sure!!

i both Hate and Love this book!!
oh my god.. this book gave me the heebiegeebies! did i spell that right? never in my 51 years have i ever wanted an antangonist to pay! i wanted to punish our lead character beyond every aching being of my body. the character made me physically growl! ok.. with that said.. the narrators were amazing.. the story sickening & twisting.. i, as a true/real victim, saw the dark side.. its ok tho..i'm well past that stage - contact for details. i wont lie. so when we headed down that path.. i saw it and it scared me. this book awakened my "spidey" senses and it creeped me out to the point i didnt want to stop.. all i have to say is ugh... i want the lead to die and thank you for an amazing psychological thriller.. well crafted.. well narrated.. i need a shower its making all things feel too real for comfort. great book!!!

Insane!!
I thought this book was insane. Laura is a true nut job and the story just keeps unfolding with more twists and turn and dayum moments!! The narrators were spot on and I enjoyed listening to them very much!! This was my first John Marrs book and I look forward to more from him.

This Will Mess With Your Mind
We have a volunteer who is fairly 'off her rocker' who is giving advice to people who are contemplating ending their lives. The volunteer, instead of telling the suffering people who need her help that they can survive- instead tries to make it then kill themselves. She gives them advice on how the best ways will work, and she's kind of an expert in the field. She is something evil and her husband knows it. He can;t keep her away from their girls even thought she presents so much danger to them all.
It seems the Good Samaritan likes to driver her patients over the brink and revels in their deaths. How does she live this way?
There area secrets buried so deep that they will never see the sun,, but how ,much can just one take..

Laura is Amy Dunne on steroids!
THE GOOD SAMARITAN is a dark, dark psychological thriller about a woman who is evil beyond comprehension. Her goal is to hear the last breath of as many people as possible. She works at a suicide hotline, but rather than trying to talk people out of killing themselves she volunteers to help them. Her ruthless and self obsessed knows no bounds. This novel is a good story, but I cannot recommend it.

WOW, what a great read!
Where does The Good Samaritan rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's very different from the normal psychopathic protagonist story that I usually read. VERY different, and it kept me listening. There are twists and turns around every corner right until the end. You may not be happy about the ending, but things don't always turn out rosy, do they?
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't have a favorite charachter; they are all complex.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Very appropriate to the personalities and genders and pleasing to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I just found myself saying, WOW.

A Problem Like Laura
There are, in truth, a lot of scheming nasty characters we are familiar with both real and fictional. But even such arch schemers as Machiavelli, Dunstan and co are would have to be at the top of their game to match Laura. In today's politically correct world I guess she'd be labelled a troubled individual. That just doesn't do her justice though and you'd really need to descend into the cruder vernacular to get close to something more suitable.
Time after time in the book you will gasp at just how far she is willing to go to get what she wants and wince at how to her it all seems quite reasonable. Nothing and no-one is out of bounds. I think the premise for this book is excellent and most importantly it delivers that first and then keeps on delivering until the very end.
The split narration suits the book's structure almost perfectly, the two leads do an excellent job particularly in delivering Laura,
I had a very long road trip this weekend to watch my football team and this book made it the perfect weekend. Laura kept me guessing and gasping from the South Coast up to Carlisle and that is no mean feat. The amazing thing was that she herself is a tragic character but not many are likely to spare her any sympathy after reading The Good Samaritan! She really is Malignant Narcissism brought to life!

Mindblowingly dark and horrific.
Over the years I've read/listened to hundreds of novels which have contained stories about the worst of humanity. Psychopaths,serial killers, poisoners, baby killers, ...truly the worst of the worst but hand on heart none of them can touch Laura. She is my absolute nightmare.
A helping hand to the suicidal, an absolute narcissistic who makes you hate her from the word go but be inside her head for a while and you begin to understand her awful childhood or do you? Nothing is as it seems with Laura.
John Mars has written a book which left me utterly terrified to listen to late at night. I'm an insomniac and I tend to use audible to get me through the night but not Laura. She had me waiting till day light before I could continue. Anyone who comes into contact with Laura will be contaminated by her evil...
Her family are tainted, she manipulates her work mates (she's a volunteer with End of the Line' ) her poor disabled son, oh Laura...
Told in short chapters the book moves at a fair pace. The first halve builds the story up from a couple of people's perspectives and it's interesting to hear the subtle differences between the two. The second halve concentrates mainly on Laura and it's this part which really makes the novel.
Anyhow I loved the narrators and I'm off now to see what else this author has written...

Brilliant
For me this was a new and fresh way of telling a crime/thriller story. It was really clever done, in my opinion. Constantly pacing, keeping you interested, while not given too much away. A rare skill these days, I think. I liked the female narrator, struggled a bit with the male ones that are introduced later but eventually settled into them and liked them as well. Never saw any of the twists coming and there were plenty.

Engaging start but lazy ending.
This book starts brilliantly, the beginning gripped me and was compelling.
Then about 4 hours from the end the story sags badly as the characters behave in ways which are increasingly ridiculous and unbelievable.
The ending is lazy and unsatisfying, it seemed that the author, having written such an engaging beginning, lost interest in the characters and plot development.

Clever Pot Line.
We learn right at the start that Laura works for an organisation similar to The Samaritans who are supposed to help people who are considering suicide. However, Laura is a sociopath and she only took that job so that she could encourage callers to go ahead and kill themselves while she listens to their last breath.
Initially I thought that might be the sum total of the book, but luckily that was just the start and the pleasure of the book is discovering all the different facets as the twists and turns are revealed in a measured way all throughout the story. We keep thinking we understand what is happening, but then because Laura is an unreliable narrator of her own story, it turns out that something different is the case.
The actors playing the parts of Laura and Ryan did an absolutely fantastic job. Just right for their parts. There were a couple more actors who came in towards the end who were not so good - especially the final one. She was awful. (My 5* rating is for the two lead actors.)

The Good Samaritan
What a fantastic book.
I loved everything about this book, it appealed to my dark side. It was great listening as it really brought the book to life for me.
How easily the truth can be distorted and manipulated by any one person, how far would you go for kicks? Or for your family.
If you love a book that has twists and turns you would not expect. To be drawn in to a book that makes you want to read/listen to the very end just to see how it all works out... then this is the one for you.

A very uncomfortable read/listen
Listening to someone subtly encouraging suicide to a vulnerable person is never going to be an easy read.
The retaliation of the grieving husband was understandable to a degree but further into the story it beggered belief why he didn't just go to the police. It got so uncomfortable at one point I nearly stopped listening to the book.
There was enough suspense to keep me interested with a twist that was a little predictable as the story neared to a close.
I am still undecided whether the narrators were suited to the roles or if it was the writing that made some sections a little stiff.
I much preferred John Marrs other books "The One" and "The Passengers".

Absolutely Bonkers But A Rip Roaring Listen!
This book is totally mad! Elizabeth Knowelden’s whispering narration isn’t usually my favourite but it’s perfect for this character. The other narrators are good, though Ryan does sound like a parody. Perhaps that’s the only way his narrator could bring himself to read it... Having said all that, I actually, strangely, bizarrely quite enjoyed it (though I’m not sure I’d admit that out loud).

dark and twisted psychological thriller
Wow, this book! Where do I even start? Saying this makes me fear a little bit for my own mental state, but I just loved this dark and twisted tale of cat-and-mouse! It is definitely one of the most sinister books I have read all year, and one that made it easily onto my favourites list.
The Good Samaritan must be THE best use of the unreliable narrator theme I have come across for a long, long time. It also has one of the most deranged and psychopathic lead characters I have encountered for a while. After the first third of the book unfolds through Laura’s POV, short and sharp chapters take over in a he said / she said fashion that plays out like a deadly game of tennis. One minute the ball is in Laura’s court, then it’s Ryan who wins a set. Wimbledon has nothing on this evil little match that is played with live grenades that are meant to detonate the other’s life on impact. My head was spinning from my metaphorical head-bobbing – ping, pong, back and forth, back and forth. It was so nail-bitingly thrilling that I got palpitations and almost needed to triage myself for some blood pressure control and GTN spray. It’s not often that a thriller manages to get the better of me!
I could go on and on about the greatness of this book, so I will cut it short: if you love a dark and twisted psychological thriller that messes with your mind, then rush out and buy, beg, borrow or steal this book right now! Now for the trigger warning – some people may find the theme of suicide and depression and preying on the vulnerable extremely distressing. If this subject touches a nerve, then perhaps this book is not for you.
I listened to it on Audible and spent a LOT of time sitting in the car in the driveway just to steal a few more minutes of listening time. After a long shift at work, this is always a sign of how much I love a book! Very highly recommended to all fellow lovers of dark and twisted tales!

Boring and depressing.
This was my 3rd John Marrs novel and I was excited to listen to it. After reading, and thoroughly enjoying The One and The Passengers, I thought ‘finally I have found an author I like enough to follow’. I still try to remain impartial before beginning a new book and did so with this one but I just did not enjoy this one at all. I found a lot of the descriptions of how one feels to be overdone. I’m so bored with that type of writing, just get on with the story. Many explanations were unclear which was disappointing as these were the main reason I continued to push on with it, and the ending was anticlimactic. As for the audio, the narrator had a lovely voice but I don’t feel it was well suited to this book, even though she was meant to have a soothing voice, it just wasn’t the right one. I’m still optimistic about reading another of Marrs’ novels but this one just didn’t cut it for me

Interesting Story....
This was an enjoyable book. I found the story and the way it was structured to be interesting. I initially thought the stroy was going so fast but as it progressed, it worked out perfectly.
Definitely worth a read/listen. I have listed to 2 of John Marrs stories and they are compelling

Excellent on every level. For anybody who knows a highly manipulative person this story is so believable.
Narration was first class.
