Publisher's Summary

Here's a fantastic ghost adventure story, laced with menace and humour.

When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?

Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.

A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

Crisp story that keeps you wondering!

I wanted a book that was <10 hours in duration, and based on the reviews, ended up choosing this book to be my companion over the weekend -- one of the best decisions I have ever made. The story keeps you wondering, and even though you might get some Harry Potter (the boy who survived) vibes from the book, it holds its own, and tells you a thing or two about coming of age and the feeling of belonging.

Delightfully soothing

There is a certain calm and mystery of the story. One would feel lifted and carried into the graveyard like a leaf in a autumn wind. It was as if I was one of the ghosts, a friend of the boy, never talking, just peering from my grave out to his world. The music in the narrative will stay with me forever as will the desire to live just like the boy and to embrace death as an old friend when time does come. The book reignited the desire to live, to learn, to love fearlessly.

Thanks Neil Gaiman, I'm charmed, for sure.

He does voices too!

Neil Gaiman has been my favourite author. And this is the first time I ever heard him narrate his book. That too one of my favourite books of all. It’s remarkable how he carries the audience through the words and the voices. Thank you for this amazing story.

This book has something for everyone

“People want to forget the impossible. It makes their world safer.”

I've been going through a lot of Gaiman audiobooks this year - with 'The Graveyard Book' being the third one I've listened to this year (and the first two being 'The Sandman' and 'Norse Mythology').

'The Graveyard Book' tells the story of Nobody 'Bod' Owens, a boy who parents were murdered when he was just a wee lil' baby, and found himself rescued by the dead inhabitants (also known as 'ghosts', teehee) of a nearby graveyard.

I'd like to get one thing out of the way right off the bat - Gaiman is an enthralling narrator. The control he wields over his magnificently calming voice, and the vocal variety he infuses to each and every character, makes each and every one of his audiobooks an absolute delight to plug into your ears.

I'm stating this first because I feel I didn't give him the credit he deserved for his performances in his audiobooks that I've listened to prior to this one. From the calming demeanor of Silas to the heavily accented Miss Lupescu, his voice acting once again shines bright.

The story is a pleasant one and certainly oozes with charm. Bod serves as a very likeable protagonist - one who is born and brought up around the dead, and yet, is very much as alive as you and I. One who thrives in the presence of ghosts, but is an outcast in the presence of the living.

The plot focuses on Bod's journey from childhood to adolescence, with no singular plot point tying the chapters togethers (with the exception of the Jacks of All Trades, the organization behind the murder of his family, sharing a fairly decent spotlight). From befriending a girl to getting captured by ghouls to trying his hand at school, Gaiman places our affable half-living, half-dead hero in many interesting scenarios that make for an engaging read.

Although this book is marketed as YA, I'd argue that its' themes, content, characters and story are very much fit for children - and I would go so far as to recommend this book for anyone of any age.

There's something in 'The Graveyard Book' for everyone - and as I've come to learn, you simply can never go wrong with picking up a Neil Gaiman work.

Fantastic!

Wonderful story, brilliantly narrated by Gaiman himself. But I hated that the background music at the beginning of each chapter drowned the voice of the narration for quite a few seconds.
