Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

A revolutionary book with a stellar narration! Born from the BLM movement, this book touches upon the various nuances and experiences of the African American community in the US. The characters are lovable, funny and wise. The character developments were really well done too. The advice shared by the parents is relatable even to elder readers.
I recently read that this book has been censored and not allowed in libraries of some American schools. That's really tragic as it shuts kids out of discussions about police brutality. This book is a must read.
Bahni Turpin did such a great job with the narration! I had to remind myself sometimes that this voice of a 13 year old boy is actually of a much older lady.

The story of course is well written but I am wary of listening to fiction because I always felt it would ruin my experience of the story. But Bahni Turpin brought each and every character alive. I was almost watching a show inside my head. She made subtle changes to the character voices and switched accents which made them distinctive without being theatrical. This book has opened my mind to exploring more fiction books in audio format.

Exceptional narration

This is so utterly beautiful..that I fail to find words that can... suitably elocute my experience. I felt that I was experiencing the characters, their pains & pangs, everything felt real.

Loved it!

Good read.
