Publisher's Summary

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

The story is spooky but not scary.

The writting of novel is great but it doesn't scare much, surely I got scared sometimes but overall it hasn't live up to my expectations. The plot introduce some questions and has left unanswered. Sometimes it feels philosophical more than horror book. I don't like the conclusion of the story at all, it must have been better. The author doesn't try to explain the reason of super natural activities.
Also the quality of recording is quite average.
P.S. If you are looking to read a horror novel that gives you sleepless nights then this surely isn't one.

Excellent narration.

The excellent narration by Bernadette Dunne brings the haunting of the enigmatic Hill House to life. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Good, but I wish there was more.

I listened to this audiobook after watching the series of the same name that it had inspired. The story in the novel pales in comparison to the show, in my opinion. The book is certainly eerie in parts, and the narration is quite good, but I just find myself repeatedly wishing that there was more to it.

Shirley Jackson's writing is lovely with it's descriptive prose and I would have liked to find something scarier in this book, because her writing would definitely do justice to it.
