About this listen

Sarah's grandfather was a horseman of rare talent - only the exceptional are allowed into France's elite riding academy, Le Cadre Noir. But life took an unexpected turn, and now from a council estate in east London, the Captain hopes to train his granddaughter towards a better life.

Natasha is a lawyer whose job is to represent the best interests of children. Her confidence in her judgement has been shaken and her marriage has died - but an encounter with Sarah may lead to Natasha learning all she needs to know about life from a fourteen-year-old girl and a large horse named Boo.

While I am a feminist and all for adventurous young women, I found myself furious with the way Sarah and Natasha behaved. I thing that they were both aggravating and stupid. Thankfully they redeemed themselves in the end.
Also, if they were looking for a girl with a horse who might need to rest for the night, why would they not look for stables instead of hotels? And which person in his/ her right mind would allow a 14 year old to roam around without reporting her to the police? And wouldn't they have got into serious trouble in case the girl was harmed? For not reporting a missing child for days?
Besides, with so many stories being interwoven into the narrative, I found myself irritated and if I were reading a book, I might have skipped many pages. And there was so many details packed in, that I felt inundated!
Still, it was engaging. I loved the beginning and the end. The middle could have done with a lot more pruning. A good story, well worth a read.

Good story. unnecessarily protracted.
