Publisher's Summary
Book 2 of The Realms, and the sequel to the best-selling fantasy LitRPG novel Barrow King.
"I cannot believe that idiotic plan worked."
The only thing Gryph wanted when he entered the Realms was to find his missing sister. Then he pissed off a power-hungry god, got stuck in the undead hell dungeon known as the Barrow and nearly had his soul consumed.
Then things trended upwards, and with the help of a ragtag group of companions, Gryph escaped to a verdant paradise of magic and wonder. But when his exposed secrets lead to betrayal and murder, Gryph is forced to accept an insane quest or his new friends will face the headsman's axe.
Now, to stop a world-conquering zealot from capturing an ancient weapon of incredible power, Gryph must become the one thing he never wanted to be, a leader. Standing in his way are a group of crazed cultists, an army of deadly magical machines, and friends who no longer trust him.
And he is still no closer to saving his sister. The Lost City is the sequel to the breakout LitRPG hit Barrow King, an overflowing cauldron of leveling, world building, humor, and action.

The second worst series I listemed to on Audible.
As an audible listener with over 350 books in my library,I felt it necessary to write a review on this book because I HATE WEAK MC's. You would think an MC in a LitRPG to be a bad ass or at least have a strong, witty or strategic character. You know something that gives him an edge or makes him standout. He does have a character sheet that makes him standout, but this MC is way over matched is always six steps behind the plots of his foes. If you were to look at his character sheet and his abilities you would say, yea he is a bad ass, but that is not how the author writes it. The MC is consistently battling foes way out of his league. That is an expected part of most stories, however, this MC DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY OR THE WIT TO DEFEAT HIS FOES. If you like the MC getting his ass beaten and totally out witted for 16 hours out of a 17, during the same time his foe must tell him what is going on, because he can not figure it out on his own, this is the MC for you. Every opponent he has faced the author uses the same playbook. MC totally out witted, totally overmatched, broken bones ,ass kicked then with fifteen or twenty-five minutes left to listen, the MC wins the day on luck alone. No skill, no wit just luck. Don't waste a credit on this book.

not sure what happened
The first book was good but this one is all over the place with a convoluted story and MC who turns in to an idiot whose decisions don't line up with who he was in the first book and don't make sense. The LitRPG elements are forgotten and feel tacked in parts, on top of all that nothing happens in the book to move the story along.
First book was 4 or 5 stars while this one is only 2 stars.

Big letdown after book 1
The magic of the fist book is not to be found in this book, it's dull and vanilla.
And the narrator reads so slow tag I had to listen at 1.75 speed not to fall asleep.

WTH?????
I listen to this book with the anticipation of a very good follow on story to the Barrow King. What The Lost City is in reality is a very poor follow up to the Barrow King.
In the first few chapters of the book you get a glimpse of the what is thought to be the main antagonist of the series. The God King demonstrates his power and that of his pantheon. From this point you would think since Gryph has seen his competition and gotten a full measure of the Herculean task ahead of him to free his sister and his Banner coupled with the fact that Gryph is a former black-ops military man understanding that he will need a huge amount of resources as well as a small army to watch his back that part of his training would kick in immediately. It does not this guy acts like a security guard at Wal-Mart. For all the fore-planning he does and the decisions he makes it is all laughable. Throughout this story the Godhead was a pedestrian Gryph stumbles along the story like a blind and deaf bat. His character development was atrocious I learn more about the overpowered bad guy than I would have like to have known; but in truth throughout the story the bad guy was more interesting than Gryph and his companions. For that matter the Weapons Master and the Stuart was more interesting than Gryph and they were only in the story for 40 audio minutes at most.
Throughout the story the I was frequently frustrated with the obvious character negation of the Nymph. Although he ultimately plays an important part of the story. He was definitely under utilized throughout the story. When a creature tells you that he is over 3000 years old and you are fighting a overpowered dude that has just kick your ass I think you start to use your resources. Instead Gryph and company picks up the Hulks mantra "Hulk Smash" and continually gets a Thanos size beat down.
And when it is all over it fizzles out ultimately Gryph has grown within the world very marginally. Tragedy has struck there is really no appearant movement or progression to the conflict with the God King and his cronies and worst yet a extremely more powerful enemy is re/introduced with an introduced timeline that either tells an experience reader of epic novels that the God King story line will get very rushed and produce horrible reading/listening pleasure or we are headed for a Team-up that smells like every other book out there. As far as the Lit-RPG component of the series let me warn you he left that part of the book in his desk drawer before sending it to the publishers....
I was very disappointed in the The Lost City story. It had so much more potential considering the stellar story line and concept present in the Barrow King.

The search for Brynn continues
This is a good sequel to the Barrow King. It starts off calm but quickly spirals into chaos. The story revolves around Gryff (Finn) who is continuing his search for his sister.
This story really took me for a ride. There's sadness, laughter and a little bit of stupid along the way, but this made me feel like I was in the group with the characters and it reminded me of a few people I know.
This was based somewhere like an alternate realm of the Eastern Kingdoms with the Alliance, especially the dwarves (sounded just like the dark irons). I just wanted to keep shouting for the horde every time the “alliance” was mentioned, which begs the question, Chris are you for the alliance, or for the horde 😊
Really enjoyed this and am waiting for more.

Kept me guessing
Really didn’t know how this would turn out and just when I expected the author to have Gryff save the day it had another twist in the tale.
The specifics of what was happening and how got slightly “murky” in some places, but still a very enjoyable listen and I am looking forward to hearing what happens in the next book!

Better than the first!
There are sadness and plenty of laughter. I had a hard time at the beginning, but it quickly picked up the pace. The narration is really good as well, but when I'm sleepy his voice just soothes me right out so I have to put on the sleep timer so I don't miss anything.

Waste of time
The Lost City is even worse than the first part. I could live with the bad style, plot full of holes and cliches but I can't abide by the author's abuse of "brackish". Every liquid is brackish. Underground river - brackish. Inland lake - brackish. Magic potion - brackish. Sweet tea? You guessed it.

an epic LitRPG story.
the story takes a slight turn away from the opening themes of the first book, but keep steaming on ahead with the fantasy rpg elements adding in various twists and turns through out.
again Armen Taylor brings the narrative to life with a wide selection voices, accests and mannerisms.

Here is where I leave the series all together
I was barely okay with the first book, hoping it would build to a better series, but it did not. I found the book just dragged and dragged and dragged on with chapters and chapters of stuff that could have been done with a whole lot less. This is an author that needs to go back to school to learn "Less is More" I had to stop listening many times because of the drull onslaught of mind numbing detail the author thought was soooooooo important. It was sooo bad I have had to stop listening to audio books for a few days because it was just painful to hope the book would recover and pick itself back up. I do not know how this book had such decent reviews, it does not deserve it.
