About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Shaheen Khan. This definitive recording includes an introduction by J. D. Smith, read by Sagar Arya.

The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It is of immense importance to the culture of the Indian subcontinent and is a major text of Hinduism. Its discussion of human goals (artha or 'purpose', kama or 'pleasure', dharma or 'duty' and moksha or 'liberation') takes place in a long-standing tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the individual to society and the world (the nature of the 'self') and the workings of karma.

This classic work has been wonderfully translated. The author has edited the 100,000 verse original by removing repetitive parts and religious instruction which is not relevant to modern times. However, each chapter that has been edited out has been replaced by a summary of the chapter, so that the flow and gist of the original remains. Unless one is a scholar intending to read this for a deep study, this translation is appropriate for almost everyone else.

Appropriately edited for modern times

Both the content and the narration are very good. I've had a very profound time listening it.

Became a bit wiser

As much as the Mahabharata being the longest epic in the world and going through it seemed a monumental task, the narrator walked through it comfortably and made it interesting. Also, towards the end, the explanation clarified whatsoever things created a doubt in one's mind.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it !

Mahabharata Uncomplicated

It was a ride unlike any. Have already recommended it to pretty much everyone in my circle. It was a very smart move to put the introduction at the end.

Finally got to know Mahabharat in detail
