Publisher's Summary

For the last 20 years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission.

Her goal, as cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: if you want to lift a society up, invest in women.

In this candid and inspiring audiobook, Gates traces her awakening to the link between women’s empowerment and the health of societies. She shows some of the tremendous opportunities that exist right now to 'turbo charge' change. And she provides simple and effective ways each one of us can make a difference.

Convinced that all women should be free to decide whether and when to have children, Gates took her first step onto the global stage to make a stand for family planning. That step launched her into further efforts: to ensure women everywhere have access to every kind of job; to encourage men around the globe to share equally in the burdens of household work; to advocate for paid family leave for everyone; to eliminate gender bias in all its forms.

Throughout, Gates introduces us to her heroes in the movement towards equality, offers startling data, shares moving conversations she’s had with women from all over the world - and shows how we can all get involved.

A personal statement of passionate conviction, this book tells of Gates’ journey from a partner working behind the scenes to one of the world’s foremost advocates for women, driven by the belief that no one should be excluded, all lives have equal value, and gender equality is the lever that lifts everything.

Eye Opening!

Wow. What a great book it is! Came at a time when I've been witnessing how amazing my wife/mother of our new born is. Not that I've never respected women, but the amount of love, dedication she has put into raising our beloved son is second to none, and makes me honor women deeply. Reading this book and seeing my wife take care of our son makes me realise how much women aren't appreciated enough. This book has ignited in me the hunger and the desire to stand up for women and everyone marginalized. Thanks to my wife and Melinda for opening my eyes.

Heartwrenching and inspiring

One of the most touching and inspirational books I’ve ever read. At times it felt as if my heart physically broke. I would recommend that everyone read this book irrespective of gender or age. It inspired me not to give in to pessimism and negativity but to focus on staying optimistic and positive as the foundation truly makes a difference and keeps on doing so. I have endless respect for both Bill and Melinda Gates who gives so much more than their wealth and expertise but their hearts as well.

Some things everyone should know

Melinda Gates describes the many struggles of women and minorities around the world, some recognisable, others far away but painfully real. She brings an empathic and humble story, she recognizes her own flaws and biasses in the process. A must read/listen for every woman and maybe even more so for men.

Amazingly inspiring and insightful

This was a great book, amazingly written and I am so happy that this foundation has worked extensively in so many third world countries and identified ways to resolve the challenges women in many countries face. I am only keen to learn more reading this and thank you for writing so passionately on this subject! Dhipa

One of the most important books I've read in years

Totally opened my eyes to a lot of things while reminding me of plenty of others. Most refreshing is the humility of Melinda's narration - she is quick to highlight how she didn't appreciate the importance of an issue or factor, so doesn't come across like some kind of ultra virtuous preacher who has always been supremely altruistic and knowledgeable. If you are human, you should listen to this book.

a lot of admiration for melinda

I think I am in awe of Melinda and have utmost respect for her! she has truly achieved incredible feats in her career. I think her task to tackle such topics are challenging. I wouldn't say I found it the most engaging book and found it hard to keep interested. however, it has made me appreciate the work the gates Foundation does.
