1 Samuel 7 is about Samuel’s emergence as the nation of Israel’s spiritual and military leader (i.e., a judge). The contrast with the house of Eli is again palpable. The main focus of this emergence is a revival in Israel and the subsequent conflict with the Philistine where, after a long absence, God fights for Israel certifying Samuel’s status. This episode comments on these items along with focusing on “the Baals and Ashtaroth” Israel must forsake. Some discussion is also given to the term Asherah (plural: Asherim). 1 Samuel 5-6 continues the biblical saga of the loss of the ark of the covenant to the Philistines. Specifically, the chapters detail the fallout upon the Philistines as Yahweh chooses to punish them for taking the ark. The episode includes an interesting scene of cosmic geography and spiritual warfare (1 Sam 5:1-5). Most of the content, however, details Yahweh’s judgment of the Philistines, a judgment that involves the Philistines offering a “guilt offering” to Yahweh. This offering included objects or emblems that were designed to cajole Yahweh into relenting, and so the objects in some way telegraph what the punishments included. English translations have these objects as golden mice and golden “tumors” or “hemorrhoids” (Hebrew term: ʿophalim). This episode follows recent archaeological research that demonstrate there is a better way to understand the nature of the ʿophalim, one that makes this episode for adults only. Great Biblical Material

Heiser distills his and many other Bible scholars' research into biblical book and subject teaching for non-scholars. He delves into the thinking of the new and old Testament writers, as well as writers in the inter-testamental period to greatly expand one's understanding of what the writers were communicating. The series covers entire books - Hebrews, Exodus, Ezekiel, etc., and subjects like marriage and divorce in the old and new Testaments, old Testament influences in the Gospels, and material from Heiser's Unseen Realm book. Also he has guest scholars on the podcast from time to time, along with periodic question and answer episodes. It's highly recommended to motivated listeners who want more than the usual Sunday sermon-level fare, or popular Christian books, in an easy-to-listen format.

Best Bible Podcast Out There

I have learned so much listening to this podcast over the past several years. There are several deep dives into both the Old and New Testament. There is also many many episodes covering pretty much any question one might have, especially about the "weirder" parts of the Bible. So glad that its on Audible now!

Dr. Michael S. Heiser is a Godsend!

I have just started listening to The Naked Bible Podcast a couple months ago. It is because Dr. Michael Beiser is the one narrating and writing it. I love how he breaks The Bible down for you to understand it from a different point of view. Actually from the point of view of the people who wrote The Bible and the 1st century Jew, so I feel like I'm learning The Bible all over again. I am currently on episode 94 I'm a late starter, lol, but I love every single episode that I have listened to so far and have learned so much. On top of that I received several of his books the Unseen Realm, Demons, Angels, etc. Thank you!

Excellent introduction to 1 Samuel.

The Introduction is very interesting. Dr Heiser is very knowledgeable and he helps me think of the content differently than what I have been taught. He encourages thought and questioning.

Filling in my ignorance gaps.

I have listened to good teachers of the bible but they just don't cover everything pertaining to the biblical context. I understand everyone has limited knowledge somewhere in life so no negativity towards them in any way. I have ignorance when it comes to Hebrew and the true context of the Old Testament and how it pertains to the New. I just want the truth on what was being said in the Old and New. This podcast has thrown some really good mind grenades at the ignorance I have and how Jewish culture thought and what they were thinking and experiencing during that time. It helps me in my own Bible study too, to make sense of what I am reading. Thanks for the effort put into this Podcast!

Perhaps the best Bible podcast ever

Dr Heiser's clear, laymen's language brings deep scholarship and the newest findings to the average person - with all the depth you'd want in a Post-Doctoral seminar. Simple, clear, reasonable, and spoken with a laconic hunour. What's not to like? This stuff is amazing, and all free. I am a pastor, and this has made my understanding of the Old Testament leeap off the page of nice stories, to become integral to EVERYTHING we do in life, and to understanding of the New Testament. It is truly extraordinary. And as he says, his dirty little secret is that this is not uniquely his information - it is all peer-reviewed material accpeted by most OT scholarsw!!!

Refreshing and Insightful

Happened upon this by accident and am really glad I did. Brilliant discussion on the reality of seeing God in our culture in ways I was previously blind to. Refreshing and insightful!
