While public opinion in the West is largely indifferent, the political analysts are less sanguine - Russian meltdown will make the disintegration of the Balkans look like the collapse of a cup-cake.

Pacey Forsyth!
The plot thickened, moved at neck break speed and suddenly thinned towards the conclusion.
Wanted to get more out of it.
But it definitely is a different kind of Forsyth creation.

More "novely" than some of his other books
Excellent writing as always from Forsyth. Detailed descriptions of real world politics and spycraft as background to a believable fiction. I think this was written to please more of a US audience, with an American lone wolf protagonist and a more standard fiction formula than Jackal and some other earlier work. Still we'll worth the listen! Oh and all the other books I've heard have been read by David Rintoul who is a master actor. At first the recording quality and new actor put me off, but after a while he grew on me, and his range of completely different character voices is amazing!

Loved it
I had never read or listened to a FF novel before the Negotiator so didn't really know what to expect, so this really surpassed my expectations. I find that a lot of modern novels are too graphic or violent with excessive bad language, this story manages to keep all of these elements to an acceptable level. Narrator also excellent.

Slow Start
If I had not persevered, I would have closed the book less than a 1/3 in. there is a lot of plot setting, before you get to the interesting bits, however once past the plot setting, the book picks up pace, and turns out to be a good read. A couple of good unexpected twists in the story. Worth persevering.

Variably gripping
Most of the author’s books I’ve read/listened to have been engrossing and the voluminous descriptive stuff has added to the authenticity of the story. However, in this book the narrative dragged in places and the details sometimes felt like padding. It’s a complicated story, particularly at the beginning, but it does come hurriedly together towards the end. The best part is the middle third as the negotiator and kidnappers play cat and mouse with tension mounting until the kidnap ends. The remaining third of the book, involving the negotiator tracking down the kidnappers, is too long-drawn out and somewhat repetitive.
Steven Pacey is a good narrator but I have a preference for David Rintoul reading this author's books.

I believe this to be one of Forsyth’s best books and the narrator, Steven Pacey, did an incredible job! He managed a different voice for each character, male, female, English, American, French, Russian, Dutch, German, perfect accents! Well done! A really good listen!

Fred Forsyth at his best
masterfully told, with all the exquisite, obsessive detail that is so the marque of FF this tale pits the skill and determination of a lone ex Green Beret against the combined with of Scotland Yard, the CIA and FBI.
There's the unavoidable romance, classic maniacal genius on the manipulator side and bombastic Washington beaurocrats. In many respects reminiscent of later James Bond stories, but with more colour and detail.
Told with skill and engagement, certainly caught my attention, even if the plot was ever so slightly predictable.
Perhaps not as spellbinding as "Day of the Jackel" but better than " The Forth Protocol", this ranks highly on the Forsyth library.

Loved the globe encompassing storyline where the fate of whole nations can be affected by actions of few people.
All seemingly small situations around different parts of the world combine to form a cohesive thriller, where the suspense & will keep you reading till the end.
Excellent book.
