Publisher's Summary

A fourth collection of BBC Radio 4 dramatisations, adapted by Alexander McCall Smith from his own best-selling books.

Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier - and only - lady detective, is back with another batch of unusual cases.

In these eight episodes, she receives a visit from a very important person; helps out Mma Potokwani, who has had bad news at the Orphan Farm; looks into who is orchestrating a campaign against Mma Soleti; and welcomes a new arrival - while righting an old wrong.

Plus, Mr JLB Matekoni’s apprentice gets into trouble; Mma Makutsi is hiding a secret; and Mma Ramotswe tries to come to terms with one of the trickiest situations she has ever faced: taking a holiday.

The stories included are: A Man from a Far Place, The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection, The Modern Husband Course, The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon, The Handsome Man’s Deluxe Café, The Dish of Yesterday, This Is Not a Rubbish Boy and The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine

Brought to life with evocative music and a full cast, these engaging adaptations star Claire Benedict as Mma Ramotswe, with Nadine Marshall as Mma Makutsi and Joseph Marcell as Mr JLB Matekoni.

First Four Stories Are Repeat Material 😒

Unfortunately, the first four stories of this fourth volume are repeats of stories included in volume three, even though the table of contents for neither volume reflects this. That was an irksome and discouraging discovery. From the fifth story on, although the stories are new, they are not up to the quality of the stories in previous volumes. Even though I loved the first several volumes, I’m not sure I’ll be purchasing volume five if/when it is released.

New stories well written w/ excellent performances

I didn't experience the duplicate book issue I read about in the only two reviews to date, so that problem must have been fixed.

These new stories are very well written, and the author's radio play writing has really tightened up. He has extracted the essence of the book stories very well and it's like re-visiting the books' quickly. The performances are wonderful and the voice actors have done very well to portray the book characters' personalities.

The only voice actor I had an issue with was the male chosen to portray the boy child. The voice was too mature to be a child's voice, but perhaps it's hard to find an actual child to read the lines.

These stories were excellent and very enjoyable. Sometimes life seems too dystopian these days and I indulge myself by escaping via a binge re-read of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books. With so many books, that can be a long escape. With these "radio" dramatisations I can "escape" with a much quicker revisit to the kinder and gentler world of Alexander McCall Smith's version of Botswana.

I love the singing between stories too. I highly recommend these dramatisations for people who love this book series.

More news from Gabarone

I have enjoyed the radio programs as a nice extension of the novels. The themes are all there with some abridgments, but the actors add so much warmth. And, of course, imagination fills in all the scenery. Lovely.

VOL. 3 & VOL. 4 ARE THE SAME

I have tried to call audiobook but they either keep hanging up or do not understand english AND then hang up. They refuse to check the problem and refuse to return the money. Personally, I would prefer the correct book. I CANNOT STAND WHEN I EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM AND THEN AM SPOKEN TO AS IF I WASN'T CLEAR. Wrong book for wrong label. Don't tell me that I didn't download it correctly. There is only one way to do it once it is purchased. All they have to do is look. Do I really have to do their job AND my job too? And pay for it? REALLY?! SMH!

Not for Mystery Lovers

These are not really mysteries and more just the stories of two women who happen to run a detective agency. The mysteries were not interesting, and the characters seemed difficult and flat. Not for me.

Check content before buying

Love these stories. Beautifully written and performed. If you’ve already bought vols 1-3 though you won’t need vol 4 as repeats content.

Absolutely delightful!

Top notch performance tied with excellent storytelling. What’s not to like? Didn’t want it to end.
