If you read only ONE book this year...

...make it The One. What a great, engaging, and unique story.
What if there was really a soul mate for you somewhere in this wide world based only and completely on genetics? No matter your race, creed, religion, looks, where in the world you live, age, mental state, or even sexual orientation? And what if there existed a test, where for a simple swab and 9.99 your DNA match can be revealed to you? Would you do it? What if you are already happily married? Or what if your match is your same sex, and you are heterosexual (or at least, thought you were?!).
I found the concept of "DNA matching" a little suspicious at first, and actually that healthy skepticism stayed with me through the end. But that did not detract from the overall vision that I think the author was trying to convey.
The story is told through the points of view five main characters. Here are a few- Ellie, the CEO of a controversial mega-corporation who is both revered and reviled; Nathan, in love with his fiancé and ready to settle down, if only the girlfriend would stop insisting they "take the test;" Christopher, an ambitious and goal-oriented psychopath who finds his match and feels his life finally about to change.
The book is told in fast-paced, short chapters alternating between the five main characters. This choice made it near impossible for me to put the book down and it worked absolutely wonderfully to showcast the different experiences, opportunities, and dangers inherent in this technology. As is often the case with multiple POV storylines, some storylines may interest you overall more than others. But in the end John Marrs achieved the seemingly impossible: making me care about every single one of then, even the more than flawed ones.
Also, this book made me think A LOT about where the story ended for each character. Who "deserved" his or her fate? Was there ever a truly "happy ending?" If so, at what cost?
An excellent book- smart, savvy, and superbly well done- that I highly recommend. I will be looking for more John Marrs books in the future!

Not the One

I was told this was a science fiction novel. But the author has little understanding of the science behind the premise behind the book. This is a romance following 4-5 main characters. It's similar to "Love, Actually" in that way. It is long, boring, and unbelievable. It's as if someone said "What would happen if dating sites picked the perfect match." And then tried to find the problems with that eventuality. I slogged through this book hoping it would all make sense. But in the end it's a dressed-up Harlequin romance. Not recommended.

Very interesting

I really enjoyed this book. All the stories are so different, yet they are intertwined in a way that keeps you engaged. The ending(s) are unique and I enjoyed the twists throughout the book. All of the narrators did a great job, as well. Would definitely recommend.

This was actually a pretty interesting book!

I didn't have high expectations for this book - novels with multiple characters aren't usually done well. But this one was great! What if you could match yourself up with your soulmate using DNA? It's a crazy concept, and of course it has crazy consequences. The narrators did a great job, and all of the characters were distinguishable from each other. Well-written. I definitely recommend...

Very Interesting!

Any additional comments?

I loved this book! I found the premise to be interesting, that we all have a genetic match, but the characters really pulled me in. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen! I loved the way the author weaved the story, and the narrators did such a tremendous job. I really felt like I was a part of it, and at times i was on the edge of my seat wanting to skip to the next part to see what happened. Warning though... the beginning was a little confusing... i didn't know who was who or what was going on... it took about 3 chapters before I really got what the author was trying to do, in the authors defense, i could be a little slow..lol. Don't give up on this book, it was great!

Good story, but drags at times

I enjoyed this book and got to know the characters well enough to be invested in their fortune. But I did find parts to be a bit slow or off topic and I expected the various characters to be drawn together more at the end ... But still an enjoyable read with a good mix of pseudo-tech, love, and murder.

I absolutely loved this book!!

I liked the concept of the story line before I started reading but this book really exceeded my expectations!
It made me laugh, cry and had me on the edge of my seat at times. This is a great listen and I was completely hooked.
The narration was brilliant and I enjoyed all of the different characters!
I would highly recommend this book!

Could have been so much more...

This was a fairly decent listen, but left me feeling it could have been so much more, both from a literary and narration point of view.
They story's concept was interesting but I thought the execution of the story was a bit hit and miss. Some parts of the book left me gagging for the next chapter in that character's story while others left me cringing, and fast-forwarding to get past it.
Some of the narration I feel was miscast and over read in some parts but, in the main, was OK.
Not Booker prize material, but wouldn't be the first book in the fire on The Day after Tomorrow.

it was OK, honestly it was a bit basic frankly. I thought it might have given an interesting insight into modern relationships with a bit of a twilight zone to it. but it was just drivel

Promised a lot more

I downloaded this based on the good reviews and the interesting idea of there being a DNA match out there for all of us.

Sadly, what could have been a great read was mediocre at best with weak characters and irritatingly abrupt narration from the guy reading Nick.

I felt it was all a bit too chick lit for my taste but, I did appreciate the slight twists to the ends of each characters tales. Just a shame the rest of the book was so lightweight.

Sorry but not one I’d recommend.

Missed opurtunity

It’s unfortunate that such a fantastic idea was dealt with in a soap type way. Very light and predictable .Also the male narrator spoke like he was speaking to a class of non English speaking 7 year olds very irritating!

Bloody brilliant!

Just imagine if you could take a simple DNA test and possibly be matched with your soul mate with a 99.99% accuracy. It is really easy to imagine something like this happening in the near future. But it throws up so many questions. What if you were married and not to your soul mate? What if you sent in your swab and don’t get matched because your soul mate hasn’t yet registered? What if you believe you are heterosexual and get matched with someone of the same sex? Is this a case of beware what you wish for?

The book follows five couples who are matched, but this is definitely not a love story. And one of the couples is a serial killer and a policewoman! At first I found it hard to get my head round all the different characters but once I did I thought it was brilliantly original. Just when you thought you knew where each of the stories was going John Marrs dropped a bombshell at the end of the chapter. And the twists never stopped.

The book was read by multiple narrators, making it easy to imagine which character is speaking.

I read recently that this book is being made into a Netflix series and I think it will transfer well to the small screen.
Well done Mr Marrs. You are fast becoming one of my favourite authors!

Nice idea, badly written

Unfortunately the performances in the audio spoilt the book in particular the men’s voices. Some very odd expression and intonation in reading this.
The story idea is a really good one but it’s so far fetched it’s ridiculous. Straight menbecoming gay, serial killers dating police women, stolen babies, etc. Far too much product placement too!

Enjoyable read bought on a whim

I really enjoyed the book as a whole and found the different voice actors a useful way of distinguishing all the story lines. I thought this was a really enjoyable read for someone wanting something a bit different but not too heavy. I would probably recommend this book to female listeners more than males ones. I would absolutely try the author and narrators again!

A nice read

Great concept that really makes you think. Would I want to know? It’s a great read. And it faces you with a curiosity ( curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back) would I do it? Yes I would.
Let’s face it 99% of us would want to know our soul mate...

Didnt Expect That!

Wow. Not my usual kind of story, but the reviews everywhere were good so I gave it a try. So glad I did as this book turned out to be entertaining, thought provoking and had the shock factor. Just when you think you have an idea where all the stories within the story are going, the author drops a little detail into each and turns them on their heads. Very well written, good narration, great story.
