Publisher's Summary

The Out-of-Sync Child broke new ground by identifying sensory processing disorder, a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. This newly revised edition features additional information from recent research on vision and hearing deficits, motor skill problems, nutrition and picky eaters, ADHA, autism, and other related disorders.

good option for the beginner

it is a very good option for those who have just entered SPD/AUTISM WORLD. For those who are into this for 2-3 years or more, it is 90% recollection of what u have already gone through..But authors efforts are highly appreciated.

ok, not great

it was a struggle to listen to. I was hoping for more information on how to help my child, but most of the book was just describing all the different types of out of sync children, which almost every child would fit into one of those descriptions. The narrator was too monotone.

Good book, lazy organization by Audible

First off, if your child or student has SPD this is a must read book. So glad I found it and wish I’d read it years ago.

Some sections I skipped because they didn’t pertain to my child. Others I took notes on and went back to so I could listen again. Those chapters I will likely reference again in the future as they contain critical insights.

I imagine that’s how many people will use this book and that’s the problem. The chapters of the audio book are not identified correctly.

The first section of the book is called Chapter 1 by audible but it is not the first chapter, it is a preface. The second section is called Chapter 2 by Audible but it is actually the forward. This throws off all chapter titles and forces you to bookmark sections for later reference. This would be so easy to fix and would make the book so much easier to use.

Brilliant

This one took me a while to get through it, with starts and stops along the way, couple trips back few pages, here and there.

Overall, it was brilliant!

I wish I had met this book earlier

I wish I had read this earlier. I wish nursery schools did a better job at helping us parents recognize the signs and suggest early interventions. I feel like they are so scared to tell us something is wrong but what is really wrong is not sharing with us what can be done to help the child.

Ray detailed, very helpful.

very detailed. extremely helpful in understanding the diagnosis, etiology, evaluation and treatment of sensory processing disorder and its many forms. lots of lists, which makes it a little bit less conducive to an audiobook.

Autism Mom

I wish I listened to this book 3 years ago when my son was first diagnosed. It explains so much in so much detail. I would recommend it to be the first book any parent should read when their child is first diagnosed.

Limited explanations of the courses

There are some parts of this book that will give helpful insights for many parents. However the book fails to look at other significant causes of motor issues such as the effects of trauma, soldiers with PTSD often have the exact behaviours described in this book. See the Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk for more detail.

Also the suggestion that if it is true sensory processing disorder it can be "fixed" within a few weeks or months of therapy may be very unrealistic.
