Publisher's Summary

Oscar Wilde's only published full-length novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for eternal youth. As Basil Hallward, an aspiring artist, puts a few touches on a portrait of his handsome young friend Dorian Gray, Gray wishes that the portrait might grow old while he remains forever young. While Dorian Gray spends his life pursuing fresh experiences and new sensations, his looks do not change. However, the portrait, secretly hidden in the attic of his residence and with which he has grown increasingly obsessed, does. More and more, as Dorian struggles to hide his true identity, the portrait reveals his progressive pathway to dissolution.

A casual story with deep meaning

It's delightful to listen.
Vivid description of the scenes make you live through the story.
Lots of phrases have deep meaning and strikes chords of your life.

You will be left with wanting a bit more after finishing it.

Stephen Fry is a remarkable artist

The cold liveliness that Fry brings to his narration is fascinating. It brings about such colors in characters, that you cannot help but make your side with one or the other.

Amazing Narration!

I have become a fan of the narrator. He did his job well. Although I didn't find the story much interesting, but the narration was what kept me going.

Such a psychological masterpiece!

The story itself is new and untold. With lots of psychology to read between the lines from! And the narration is simply superb!

Excellent book, fantastically performed

This is truly a classic and was performed brilliantly by Mr. Fry! I look forward to listening to more of Mr. Fry's narrations and also to consuming more of Oscar Wilde's work

Does not match the book

I listen and follow with book which is my own preference, but this audio book does not match the book. I even tried to match with three different copies of the book but no success. I am starting to imagine that it is an shorter version.

A classic but depressing story

Starts out very thought provoking and then becomes very monotonous and depressing. Still it is a classic, a novel idea and a poignant story of what happens when you don't have any "skin in the game" and do not bear the consequences of your actions. The reader does a good job.

A dreadful wonder to behold

Its a lovely jumble of psycological and mortal conflict, and i loved every second of it. It was both more and exactly what i had expected from a literary classic. Allowing oneself to truly devote the time that is spent on listening to the story and not merely hearing it, truly does make a difference when experiencing this wonderful piece of literary art.

A Mood

Dorian purchasing multiple first editions of the book he’s obsessed with and having them bound in different colors to suit his moods IS a whole MOOD.

This is a very very quotable book (looking at you Henry). There were quite a few moments that elicited very unladylike snorts. It is witty and bold, and it’s one of the few “classics” that didn’t let me down.

There’s a handful of jabs at women - but I challenge you to find a 19th century book that doesn’t have at least one.

Props to Wilde for having the balls to publish this, though I don’t suppose it worked out too well for him.

the audiobook just skips many parts of the book

I bought the audiobook to listen to while I read along with the book. The audiobook just skips complete sentences or more than one sentence at a time. Sometimes it just skips complete paragraphs. That shouldn’t be acceptable.

Abridged version!!

Fry does a fabulous job narrating as per usual, but I was incredibly disappointed to realise that this was an abridged version of Wilde's only novel. I won't return the title but why would you spoil it like this? Very frustrating.

Amazing

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book - the commentary from Stephen Fry, the story, the pace - all of it. It is a fantastic piece of literature. Importantly it is still relevant in today’s world and the use of language is wonderful. Highly recommended!

Stephen Fry made me listen

I know this is a classic and it is what it did not say that left room for readers imagination/interpretation. But, if not because Stephen Fry had read the book, I'd given up after 1 hour listening. A classic maybe, but a very dated one.

Thankfully short.

Such a dry self-indulgent story. I really tried to like it but just wanted it to end. 5 hours of my life I won't get back.
Stephen Fry's voice was the only thing that made me stick it out.
