Publisher's Summary

An epic, spellbinding tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, The Pillars of the Earth is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece.

A Mason with a Dream

It is 1135 and civil war, famine and religious strife abound. With his family on the verge of starvation, mason Tom Builder dreams of the day that he can use his talents to create and build a cathedral like no other.

A Monk with a Burning Mission

Philip is the church prior of Kingsbridge. A resourceful man, he knows that if his town is to survive at all, it must find a way to truly thrive. He decides, then, to build Kingsbridge the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has ever known.

A World of High Ideals and Savage Cruelty

As the prior recruits his mason, so begins a journey of ambition, anarchy and the struggle for absolute power. Facing enemies that would thwart them, they will stop at nothing to fulfil their grand plans of Kingsbridge. Soon build tensions between good and evil, turning church against state, and brother against brother . . .

Critic Reviews

"Enormous and brilliant...this mammoth tale seems to touch all human emotion - love and hate, loyalty and treachery, hope and despair. This is truly a novel to get lost in." (Cosmopolitan)

"A historical saga of such breadth and density.... Follett succeeds brilliantly in combining hugeness and detail to create a novel imbued with the rawness, violence and blind faith of the era." (Sunday Express)

A beautifully written saga spanning decades.

The story was spellbinding and the performance rivetting. Ken Follet paints a vivid picture through every line in the book. I could actually see the entire story and I felt as though I was an invisible character in the story who was present and lived through every event in the book.

Loved it.

Take a bow Ken Follet

This novel is a masterpiece, masterclass in how to write a novel. Ken Follet uses the concept of vantage point to such good use that this novel should be used to taught story writing. Epic that the novel is, it uses the concept of vantage point to make the reader/listener empathize and get behind the motives of all the main character. This keeps the reader engaged while the story shifts being told from different perspectives of different characters as well as doesn't let the reader lose connection while the novel traverses the events of a particular characters life. A very satisfactory novel. Great character arcs. Great sense of justice with the end calling back to the prologue. John Lee does deserved justice to the epic tale and makes you feel the emotions, the pain, the excitement and the fear of the characters. Highly recommended.

No wonder it is a block buster!!

Simply loved listening to it. John Lee has done a fabulous job. With voice modulation and expressions I could actually visualize the story and its characters. Ken Follett has a unique style of writing. Very gripping. Was a little sad that e book came to an end!

Thoroughly entertaining

This is my first Ken Fillet book. I always thought of him as crime thriller/ spy thriller novelist.. but this book was a revelation. I must admit I did not understand all the detailed descriptions of architecture that are in the book. Nevertheless, the story spanning decades kept me glued. Performance/ narration was also extraordinary. Will surely try to get me hands on th rest of the books in the series.
