Simplistic and uninspiring
Based on the rave reviews of the book and the fact that purportedly millions of copies have been sold I probably expected too much from this book. However so far (I’ve reached the end of Chapter 3) the book has been a disappointment. There are 3 reasons for this.
The first is that the main idea presented so far is that the subconscious has the power to help you achieve what seems to be an unattainable outcome and it can be made to do so by positive auto or external suggestion. Other than this, not a single new idea or thought is discussed. Now I suppose most people who are willing to invest their time to go through this book already believe this. So the ad nauseum repetition doesn’t really help.
The second is that the book relies solely on anecdotal evidence to support the above claim. There are no scientific explanations for it and no references to credible scientific studies. Moreover the anecdotes also follow the same formulaic and highly simplistic script.
• The subject desires something that seems unattainable.
• The possibility of attaining the desired outcome is impressed on the subject’s subconscious either by the person repeating a positive message to reinforce this belief or by a mystical belief in an object or ritual.
• After a few days / weeks / months BINGO the desired outcome occurs.
Now while I don’t dispute that this is possible I’m guessing that for this to work requires a rather suggestible mindset. To insist that this method is infallible is rather misleading.
My third and main crib is that the book seems to focus solely on harnessing the subconscious towards achieving a specific, narrow goal. There is totally no mention on how to recognize and avoid self-limiting behavior in order to achieve your potential. And to me, this is a huge, huge gap in a book on the power of the subconscious mind.
In summary, if you enjoy listening to folksy wisdom this book might work for you. However if you are really looking for an insightful discussion on harnessing the power of the subconscious mind you probably won’t find it here.

The book that started it all
This is a good, easy to understand rendition of the Joseph Murphy classic. This is the book that pretty much started the self-help boom and no wonder that after all these years, the content herein is still so powerful and fresh. And you also realise just how much this book has influenced every other self-help book or programme out there, when you read this.

If "The Secret" were the Cliff Notes...
I had no idea what this was about before purchasing. I'm a student of psychology and thought that it might have something to do with that area. I am also a fan of "The Secret," so it was something of a surprise to realize that what was being discussed was very much like what "The Secret" and many other books on the same topic discussed. Murphy goes into GREAT detail how to use the law of attraction. As my headline notes, if "The Secret" were the Cliff notes, this text would be the behemoth that they were based upon! I think this text would be beneficial to those who need more information on the topics discussed in "The Secret."
After hearing some seriously outdated references and terms -- it was written in 1963, I had to do some research. I offer future readers the following caveats:
1. Take into consideration that this book is nearly 60 years old. While the concepts and philosophies that one finds in books on the law of attraction are there, there are some outdated ideas of how women and men should conduct themselves in relationships or in business (women aren't even mentioned in business settings).
2. Prepare for an overabundance of biblical and Judaeo-Christian references. While way ahead of it's time, the book relies heavily on bible phrases to make a point. Interesting since the author -- a student in the Jesuit tradition and having trained to be in the priesthood -- did spend some time in the East studying those religions as well.
Towards the end, he rambles quite a bit honing his message, I can only guess. I really enjoyed the summations at the end of each chapter.
I found the narrator's performance to be a bit grating at times. There was a 'barker' quality to his delivery that took away from the topic at hand. I found his periodic mispronunciation of common words jarring.
Overall, I would refer one to tackle this book only after being introduced to the law of attraction with a text written since 2000.

Life changing is an understatement
I am a subconscious mind coach and I have to tell you...I have not learned the mind in such a way until this book. I have grad degrees in psychology. The private schools I’ve attended haven’t even brushed the cusp of what Joseph Murphy has taught in this book. My life is changed and I will be forever grateful to this man.

Based on Christian religious faith
Got through to chapter 7 before I gave up. This book is riddled with bible verses and religious 'miracles' to somehow explain the subconscious, which to me just deligitimises the explanation in this book for the subconscious mind. Dont bother if you're not religious or a Christian. Total waste of time.

Dreadful, sounds like a sales pitch, delivered by a male with a whiny voice. I keep hoping I will come across one of these audiobooks and it will have an educated voice and it is written by someone other than a person trying to fill seminar seats. I want education, not brainwashing.
