Publisher's Summary

The Sermon on the Mount represents the essence of both Christ's teachings and the teachings of Vedanta, an ancient Indian philosophy that teaches the oneness of life. God lies within us and at the same time is everything we see.

This realization is the aim of all the Vedanta teachings. Christ said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." "The kingdom of God is within you." "Be ye perfect."

Although theologians are apt to explain away these teachings in various ways, the Vedantists believe Christ meant what he said. Listen to this remarkable recording and discover how Vedanta goes to the very heart of Christ's teaching. Vedanta came to the West in the late 19th century, not to supplant any religion, but to bring a more tangible spirituality to those who seek it. Its goal has never been to proselytize, but to help man realize the divinity within him.

Expand & Deepen Your Understanding

If you grew up listening to the Sermon on the Mount, this commentary from the Vedanta perspective will enrich your experience of its teachings. The only thing that bothered me was the formal speaking style of the narrator. I imagine his style has won him awards and that other speakers emulate him. But I would prefer a speaker I can relate to. The British theatre trained speaker puts distance between me and the text. I want to be drawn in and the formal elocution does not do it for me.

Practical and Instructional

The insight and ease of communication make this a great book. I learned a lot from Prabhavananda. I listened to it several times and got more out of it each time.

Inappropriate narration

The content is wonderful; the narration, deplorable. The speaker's voice is full of smugness and self-importance, which run so contrary to the message as to make the audiobook nearly unlistenable.

Read the book instead.

Fabulous Text/ Unfortunate Narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I have read this book and was looking forward to owning and listening to an audio version. Unfortunately, the performance of the narrator makes this not listenable for me.
Sanskrit names and terms are mispronounced and a speaking tone that veers from faux Shakespearean to American English and an utterly pretentious delivery totally ruins an incredibly wise and precious text.

Mind Expanding

Thou art our loving mother; thou art our compassionate father; thou art our true friend and constant companion. Thou art our only treasure and our only wisdom. Thou art all in all. The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta ~~ Swami Prabhavananda An observation I have made over the years is the that my Hindu friends understand Jesus the Christ’s mission far better than my Christian friends. Swami Prabhavananda’s amazing The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta confirms this. This book is packed with so much truth and wisdom; it’s left my head spinning. The way the Swami Prabhavananda blends Eastern and Western beliefs together seamlessly is amazing. Swami explains The Sermon on the Mount in ways that are meaningful and inspiring. For those raised in Christian traditions, this book will help you to embrace the teachings of Christ more fully and ground your faith in ways not yet revealed to you by traditional Christian teachings. Swami Prabhavananada explains both Christian and Vedantic theologies brilliantly. Swami makes these complex concepts clear and easy to comprehend. Often, these teachings are obscured with overly complex, heavy handed language. Swami Prabhavananada shows us that there are many paths to God, all leading to one truth ~~ yes, we are beautifully taught how all religions are in reality sharing the same truth. The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta is a fantastic book chocked full of wisdom. This is a book I will return again and again to bring more light my journey.

Great narration

A really good narrator once you get used to him - very regal, I’d happily listen to him narrate Lord of the Rings or some such. So don’t be put off by sample.
Helpful comparison essays between Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity, focusing on Christ’s teachings. Written in 1963 and still holds up, but worth saying this is pre-A Course in Miracles (that didn’t appear till 70s) so it is still traditional and less New Age. Some comments on sexuality I’m not sure about, but could be my ego coming in. Lots of useful insights and advice for living Jesus’ teachings and also those of other Prophets. A quick listen also, I finished in one sitting and have bought the hard copy so I can highlight some bits I found most useful (such as the parts about yoga practice and yogic teachings).
