About this listen

Who is Malinda Albert Kabalana? How did he die?Renegade war photographer Maali Almeida has to solve his own murder. Does that sound fun? It would be if there wasn’t so much bloody red-tape to get through. Oh and it’s not as though anyone alive actually seems to miss him, and it certainly doesn’t help that his girlfriend is related to his boyfriend. Worst of all, it’s all those goddamn memories of war, constantly interrupted by the overly chatty dead folks breezing through the afterlife. Besides, he’s so busy solving his ethical dilemmas that there’s barely any time to solve a murder-even if it’s his own.A compulsively readable dark comedy of life-death and everything in between-Chats with the Dead searingly exposes the plight of a country caught in the aftermath of civil war. Its deliciously compelling absurdity holds you in thrall right from the very first page up to its startling denouement, constantly upending its own premise with its staggering humanity.Shehan Karunatilaka has delivered a classic whodunit with a brilliant twist. The premise of the book was what made me pick this. Dead War photographer. Unravelling the mystery of his own death. But the story drags in places. My favorite part was 4th moon. The second person narration was new to me and I could not appreciate it. Perhaps because I did not like how Arun Datta narrated it. His voice modulation was terribly off. I believe if I had read this one, I’d appreciate the experience because it is pretty intense on Sri Lankan politics which is right up my alley.

I’d rather read it

The story is engaging and I’m a fan of magical realism so the book was right up my alley. Lankan politics was a topic which was familiar but never had as complete a picture as I got while listening to the book, which obviously forces you to cross reference and check which parts are real and which are fictional. Sadly the horrors of ethnic conflicts are all too real.
Narration is not the best. Found it easier to listen in 1.2x , even then because of the lack of modulation it was difficult when there were dialogues. Might also be the second person narrative.

I was completely engrossed, gripping the edge of my seat throughout the entire audiobook. Shehan Karunatilaka's masterful writing style captured my attention from start to finish. What truly set this book apart was the ingenious use of the second person perspective by the protagonist as the narrator. I had never encountered such a unique narrative technique before, and it added an extra layer of depth and immersion to the story.

I must also commend Anuj Dutta for his exceptional performance as the narrator. His ability to bring the characters to life and convey their emotions with such finesse was truly remarkable.

I loved the original style of writing, the magical realism and a story that gave one closure

Gripping and unique

Yet to complete this book, but its painful to move ahead with the lousy narration. The narrator has thrown the term voice modulation into the dustbin. Its off across all parts of the book

Coming to the story itself, the writing is in second person. So it feels very odd. The plot is creative with a good amount of magical realism but the characters are such two dimensional personalities. The plot also drags across many parts of the book

Spare you precious credit for any other book!

The writing style was not my type, narration was atrocious!
