Publisher's Summary

The Silent Miaow is the classic instruction book for all cats, based upon first-hand feline experience. Inside it contains all the information that every cat should know, such as: How to win a way into a household, take over a family and achieve control over each member. How to select a family and what to look for. How to move in. How to establish total and unquestioned sovereignty over the most comfortable chair. How to obtain the choicest food. How to treat visitors.

How to conduct a romance. And, finally: How to pass all this wisdom on to the kittens.

Pedantic but can be enjoyable to a human

If I were a cat, as this book's audience is intended to be, I would have put down this book in 30 minutes. I did just that with a self-help book that used this similar pedantic tone. It is too much of, you should do this, you shouldn't do that, if you do that other thing then you should be condescended upon. The cat who wrote this book is very full of herself, and being a cat who is also full of myself, why should I listen to her? Who does she think she is to tell me what to do?

Since I'm a human though, I mostly enjoyed this book, perhaps more the narrator than the book itself. The narrator's tone is soothing and entertaining.

The contradiction in the book though is that, the cat willingly gives up its offspring and advises kittens how to give themselves up and leave their mother. I don't believe any good cat mother could do that. Therefore I deem some advice in this book questionable, perhaps coming more from a human's perspective than a cat's. Too pedantic for the cat reader and a bit too good to be true for the human reader. Hence the 4 stars.
