About this listen

On a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire's enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name "The Sword of Kaigen".

Born into Kusanagi's legendary Matsuda family, f14-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: To master his family's fighting techniques and defend his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen's alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies.

Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface.

When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores?

the sword of kaigen is one of the best stories I've ever read. the narration was good too but I wish the Japanese and hindi pronunciations were better.

The Sword of Kaigen is an incredible story that strikes the perfect balance between action and emotion. The pacing never falters, the character building is rich and layered, and the exploration of complex feelings is handled with such care that you can’t help but grow alongside the characters.

The battles are described with stunning detail—so vivid that you feel as if you’re standing on the field, blade in hand, facing the same trials as the characters. Yet, beyond the action, this book carries a quiet wisdom. It’s a story about strength, loss, resilience, and the principles that shape who we are.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories that not only entertain but also leave you reflecting with a deeper sense of understanding.

I have such a strong desire towards books that I know are going to hurt me. I'm still reeling from all the feeling this book caused me. after months of a fantasy slump, this dawned a new breath in me.

this book is a masterpiece, painstakingly crafted with so much details. I love the world, magic, politics, and the characters so much. I wasn't expecting to sympathise with some of the character, but the way M. L. Wang understands their characters so intimately, they are able to express their innate humanity clearly on page. misaki and mamuro will forever hold a special place in my heart.

this book feels a similar to the poppy war trilogy and she who became the sun, with wars and dense politics, held by flawed yet deeply human characters, and an intimate exploration inthef humanness that flows in us all.

never felt so much pain
