Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause.

From the start to finish I was hooked on to know about the life of women who served in Vietnam, They gave their all but got a short end of the stick. My heart goes out to them.

A revelation to read about the women in War

“The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn't quite yet ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words. We were there.”

There are books you expect will be emotional… and then there are books like The Women that tear through every defence you think you have. I knew this story would be heavy, but I didn’t know it would feel like someone was quietly rearranging the furniture inside my heart. Every possible heartbreak found its way onto these pages — and yet, I couldn’t stop reading.

Kristin Hannah has this gift: she doesn’t just write historical fiction, she immerses you in an era with such clarity that you start breathing the same air as her characters. Through Frankie’s eyes, I felt the chaos of the Vietnam War, the grit of being a combat nurse, and the ache of returning home to a country that refused to acknowledge the sacrifices of its women.

Some parts made me uncomfortable. Some made me ashamed. And many reminded me how easily we forget people’s humanity when their truth doesn’t align with our own. It’s unsettling how history still finds ways to repeat itself.

This book is raw. Transparent. Unflinching. And yes — deeply traumatic. Please go in prepared. The list of trigger warnings is long, and the emotional load is heavy.

I read the book in audio, and let me just say this: Julia Whelan’s narration is nothing short of stunning. She brings a tenderness and urgency to the story that elevated the whole experience. If you enjoy audiobooks, this one is a must.

Devastatingly Beautiful

The most I knew of the Vietnam war was Agent orange and the few lines my history text book taught me. This book was a real window to the emotions of all the men and women who served in the war. History teaches us who won, who lost and who was wrong- but the emotional damage to the people who served, the reactions they came home to and the lasting impact on a generation of people is never really captured. The author has really done a great service in this regard, specially to the women who were simply forgotten. Thank you for opening this window to the world!

Deeply Touching
