About this listen

Uncle Fred is one of the hottest earls who ever donned a coronet. Or as he crisply puts it, 'There are no limits, literally none, to what I can achieve in the springtime.'

Even so, his gifts are stretched to the limit when he is urged by Lord Emsworth to save his prize pig, the Empress of Blandings, from the enforced slimming cure of the haughty Duke of Dunstable. Pongo Twistleton knows his debonair but wild uncle shouldn't really be allowed at large - especially when disguised as a brain surgeon. He fears the worst. And in yet another brilliant novel by the master of English comedy, Pongo will soon find his fears are amply justified.

Critic Reviews

"Hilarious....Jonathan Cecil succeeds all around, reading expressively and slowly....Immensely enjoyable listening." ( AudioFile)

Uncle Fred in the Springtime is an undeniable PG Wodehouse masterpiece. I had read it as a wee boy years ago and roared with unbridled laughter. When I later heard it narrated by Stephen Fry (as part of his favourite Blandings Castle tales), his intonation and voice modulation left me floored.

This wasn't quite the case when I heard it read by Jonathan Cecil, I must admit that his reading was quite good indeed but it didn't do justice to either the story or to PGW. There were several instances when you just couldn't tell the difference between characters owing to the sameness of their sounds. On the whole, there was a sort of flatness in his reading that hardly gave you cause for a chuckle much less a reason to guffaw.

JC didn't quite do justice to a PGW masterpiece!
