About this listen

In Why I Am a Hindu, one of India’s finest public intellectuals gives us a profound book about one of the world’s oldest and greatest religions. Starting with a close examination of his own belief in Hinduism, he ranges far and wide in his study of the faith. He talks about the Great Souls of Hinduism, Adi Shankara, Patanjali, Ramanuja, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and many others who made major contributions to the essence of Hinduism. He delves deep into Hinduism’s most important schools of thought (such as the Advaita Vedanta). He explains, in easily accessible language, important aspects and concepts of Hindu philosophy like the Purusharthas and Bhakti, masterfully summarizes the lessons of the Gita and Vivekananda’s ecumenism and explores with sympathy the ‘Hinduism of habit’ practised by ordinary believers. He looks at the myriad manifestations of political Hinduism in the modern era, including violence committed in the name of the faith by right-wing organizations and their adherents. He analyses Hindutva, explains its rise and dwells at length on the philosophy of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, its most significant ideologue. He is unsparing in his criticism of extremist ‘bhakts’ and unequivocal in his belief that everything that makes India a great and distinctive culture and country will be imperilled if religious ‘fundamentalists’ are allowed to take the upper hand. However, he also makes the point that it is precisely because Hindus form the majority that India has survived as a plural, secular democracy.

An eye-opener

Shashi Tharoor masterfully crafts a brilliant narrative of India's spiritual and intellectual richness. Its message has great relevance in this age of misinformation and need for global tolerance. Only one comment is that the narrator does a great job except in the pronunciation of Sanskrit and Indian words key to Indian spirituality.

The amazing writing and interpretation of the Hinduism

I loved the way Shashi Tharoor has given a blunt picture of the current Situation of India.
The difference between Hinduism and Hindutva stood out the most and the beauty of the historical significance of Islamic Hindus, Christian Hindus and how today ot has been changed so much.

Misleading title

Great first few chapters, the next few seemed more of an anti-BJP propaganda than anything else. The narrator could have done better. Managed to butcher pronunciation of almost all the Indian/Sanskrit words.

Enlightening

It is a good read with brilliant citations but must be considered solely Mr. Tharoor's take on Hinduism as well as Politics.

Brilliant

Great information for modern Indians who have lost the meaning of what being an Indian and Hindu means.

Good start, but did not feel like completing

The first few chapters are wonderful, explaining the nuances of Hinduism. But after that, I feel, the sub title of the text can be ‘Why I hate hindutva’. While I do agree to many of the issues raised, I however felt cheated by the original title. I did not intend to spend my money to hear his political points and agenda. So, unlike my other readings of Tharoor, I am totally disappointed.

Great Book with good Narration

Sashi Tharoor points out how Hinduism has been always accommodative of new ideas and thoughts and tolerant of other religions. He points of very clearly how the so called Hindutva does not follow the original tenets of Hinduism. Amazing book to understand true teachings of Hinduism.

An interesting view

The first 4 chapters were excellent. However, the speakers pronounciation of Sanskrit words were jarring .It was too angliziced.Since the author is a Congress politician I expected anti BJP in the book.
would recommend this book for just the first 4 chapters.
