Satisfactory resolution, but no more.
I agree with other reviewers about this not being the best Shetland book. I only persevered with it because it was the last one in the series. I didn't feel engaged with the story. As usual, there's no real clue about who the guilty one is going to be. Ann Cleeves just seems to select somebody during the last half hour, then produces information that we didn't previously know to explain why they did it. I got the impression that this was just written as a contractual obligation, and that the writer didn't feel any need to interest us in buying further Shetland books after this one. I personally thought the book gave a satisfactory resolution to the on/off relationship between Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves, and also a satisfactory end to the series.

Superb vocal performance brings a classic Shetland to life ...
Kenny Blyth is just awesome at animating another brilliant Shetland... I am looking forwards to hearing Ann Cleeves this month at a lovely Scottish Borders bookshop...

Not up to past standard
An average plodding detective story not her usual quality. The relationship with Willow was neither here nor there and I did not feel that there was any intense feelings on either side, It was as if the writer was in a hurry to tie up all the loose ends. After all the plodding, the detectives suddenly knew who done it but you are left floundering as to how they came to that conclusion. I have read and enjoyed virtually all of Anne Cleeves books but this one just does not do it for me.

Great story, beautifully read
All together a great listen. Makes me want to go to the islands despite the weather. Ann Cleeves is brilliant and Kenny Blyth a great actor with a delightful voice. He is capable of the convincing creation of women’s voices. Thank you.

Disappointing
I agree with other reviewers regarding the revealing of the murderer's identity. I do think that the ending is very poor regarding relationships. If we are not to find out what happens, what is the point of writing about them in the first place?

Disappointed
The whole storyline is too bland. I love the Shetland books but this had a rushed feel like jimmy was just going through the motions. The bit with Cassie is not jimmy, willow is too ambitious to change so drastically. 😢

Just like the TV series.
I think it helped to have seen the TV series "Shetland". I was able to put faces to the characters. My mother was Scottish so I appreciated the accent of the narrator. It is really well read and the story held me until the murderer is finally revealed. Great book.

Gripping modern mystery
This has been the best Shetland story yet. Ann Cleaves has always brought the Shetland isles to life with these stories. I have said to my family that I was go there for a holiday and would not need a guide book as I know it so well. This is a great novel that I could not stop listening to. The characters are complex and engaging and did not guess the ending. Kenny Blythe is the perfect narrator for these stories.
