استطاع (البنهاوى) بكفاحه أن يتحوَّل من فقير معدم إلى ثرى، يمتلك ألف فدان، فى القرية التى نزح إليها، وعندما التحق ابنه (حسين) بالكلية الحربية، بدأ (البنهاوى) يفكر فى منح أبنائه القوة والنفوذ، إلى جانب الثراء، وباقتراح من (حسين)، دفع (البنهاوى) رشوة ضخمة للسراى، لنيل لقب باشا، ولكن عمدة القرية ومأمور الناحية أوقعا (البنهاوى) وابنه فى فخ، ألقاهما فى سجن البوليس السياسى، وجاء قيام الثورة يمنحهما البراءة، ويلغى حصول (البنهاوى) على اللقب، وينتزع منه معظم أرضه، بقانون الإصلاح الزراعى..ومات (البنهاوى) من أثر الصدمة، فى حين انضم ابنه (حسين) إلى تنظيم جديد، يقيمه رجال الثورة، وأصيب ابنه (حافظ) بانهيار نفسى تام، وظل الابن الأصغر (مفيد) يقاتل لإحقاق الحق.. وفى ذلك التنظيم الثورى الجديد، بدأت حرب باردة، بين (حسين)، وبين الصاغ (ابراهم مكى)، ضابط البوليس السياسى السابق، وراح كل منهما يسعى للإيقاع بالآخر، وخاصة بعد أن بدأت علاقة (حسين) بالأميرة (عايدة)، التى تتمتع بحسن فائق..
