文政5（1822）年。月に1回、城下の店から在へ行商に出て、20余りの村の寺や手習所、名主の家を回る本屋の「私」。
上得意先のひとり、小曾根村の名主・惣兵衛は近頃、孫ほどの年の少女を後添えにもらったというが、彼女に何か良い本を見繕って欲しいと言われ――
用意した貴重な画譜(絵本)が、目を離した隙に2冊なくなっていた。(本売る日々)
村の名主たちは、本居宣長の『古事記伝』、塙保己一が編纂した『群書類従』など
高価な本を購い、書店主と語り合う。
村人が決して実用的でない知識を求めるのはなぜなのか。
徐々に彼らが知識を、特に古代や朝廷を研究する「国学」を求める理由が分かってくる。
江戸時代の豊かさは村にこそ在り、と考える著者が、本を行商する本屋を語り部にして、本を愛し知識を欲し人生を謳歌する人びとの生き生きとした暮らしぶりを描いた中編集。
