 花柳街の美女・おしのは、町で出会った折之助をだまして金を取ろうとしていた。何度か会ううちに折之助はおしのに夢中になっていく。ある冬の日、白い雪を血がどす黒く染める。まじめで純情な折之助の悲しい結末とは。

江戸の花柳街・柳橋平右衛門町の稽古所に、おしのという美人がいる。ある冬、おしのは町で出会った気弱で純真そうな武士・小出折之助をからかう。おしのは折之助が身分の高い侍の家の息子だと知ると、折之助に気があるように見せて惚れさせ、一緒になるには親方に大金を納めなければならないと言う。鴨にされたとは知らない折之助はおしのに夢中になり、金を用意しようとするが、厳しい父の金を持ち出すことはできない。途方にくれて町の人から金をゆすり取るが——。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2022 PanRolling Asian World Literature
