Alcestis, the earliest surviving play by Euripides, tells the poignant tale of a devoted wife who willingly sacrifices her life for that of her husband, King Admetus. As the play opens, Alcestis is on the brink of death, prompting a powerful confrontation between Apollo and Thanatos (Death), where Apollo seeks to extend her life but is met with resistance. He departs with a promise that a savior will arrive in Pherae to rescue her.
