About this listen
Sainte-Maxime, Land of Liberation, takes you to the heart of the history of the Provence Landings.
Let us tell you the story... In 1943, the Allies prepared two landings: in Normandy ("Overlord") and in Provence ("Dragoon"). On August 14, 1944, coded messages signaled the start of the operation in Provence. The next day, Allied forces, including a French unit, landed between Saint-Raphaël and Cavalaire. On August 16, the French army led by General de Lattre de Tassigny joined the front. Toulon and Marseille were liberated, and the link-up with the Normandy forces occurred on September 12, 1944, in Burgundy.
