KEY VERSES
Matthew 16:24 KJV “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
KEY FOCAL POINTS
Letting Go: Discovery is made through obedience to God. The Greek word for “LET HIM DENY” is ἀπαρνέομαι. It is pronounced ap-ar-neh'-om-ahee (verb). It means to deny or lose sight of oneself. This refers to completely letting go of self-interest in order to become free and capable of “picking up your cross” to follow Christ.
The Symbol of the Torch: Throughout scripture, the torch holds symbolic meaning and has a significant purpose. There is a concept of “passing a torch”, as if passing down spiritual responsibility (example reference, 2 Timothy 1:6-7). “Stepping up with courage and strength” is used when answering God’s call (example reference, Joshua 1:9). “Answering the call in your life” is a metaphor often used when describing how Christians should be “the light of the world” (example reference, Matthew 5:14-16).
Taking Action: Accepting God’s call is marked by obedience and surrender to God. Sometimes this means letting go of something or someone.
Life of Purpose: A life unashamedly belonging to God and His call. Philippians 1:20 NIV “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.”
