About this listen

George Orwell's 1984 depicts a totalitarian society in Oceania, where the ruling party, Ingsoc, controls all aspects of citizens' lives, including thoughts and history. The protagonist, Winston Smith, attempts to rebel by keeping a journal and engaging in an illicit affair. The novel explores themes of total surveillance, memory manipulation, suppression of individuality, and language (Newspeak). Set in a climate of constant fear and violence, cultivated by the party through propaganda and the "Two Minutes Hate," Winston ultimately breaks under torture in the Ministry of Love, completely submitting to Big Brother's will.
