About this listen
Motivation is one of the most misunderstood concepts when it comes to changing your relationship with alcohol.
A lot of people assume that if they were truly motivated, making a change would feel easy, or at least it would feel good. And when it's not easy and it doesn’t feel good, they start to think something has gone wrong—with their motivation or with them.
In this episode, I’m unpacking what motivation actually is (and what it isn’t), why wanting a drink doesn’t mean you don’t really want to change, and what to do when your enthusiasm inevitably dips — whether you’re doing Dry January, taking a break from drinking, or trying to build any new habit.
We talk about:
- why motivation is not the same thing as excitement or enthusiasm;
- how motivation and desire can coexist;
- why preparation matters more than motivation;
- how to stay in the game even when your initial excitement about trying something new has started to wane.
If you’ve ever thought, “I won't ever be able to change because I can't stay motivated long enough,” this episode is for you.
