Investigation of whether improved access to piped water supply in a deep rural South African village enhances the safety of water at the point of household use. The study focuses on the community of Folovhodwe, where some households relied on river water and a "Reference" group was supplied through a newly installed piped system with accessible communal taps. Researchers measured water quality based on E. coli levels and observed that although the piped water source met quality standards, the water stored in household containers was often contaminated, indicating poor water-handling practices in the home. Ultimately, the paper concludes that while access improved, the health status of the community did not automatically improve because of persistent contamination issues at the domestic level.
