It was the first time he ever shook hands man to man with I meeting I and man's fashion, and he was very proud of it. When he tried to shake hands and would taste her brother, there was something in metal and smile and the gentle traction, he inserted on her hand that made her lean forward and kissed a boy's mouth and tended to her. It felt funny, different from other kids she had known."

I die just before I came out. That's alright then. Replied marble. I just dine after I came in. And then he laughed. The laughter was just a little bit strained. The conversation began again. You assuming its hopelessness, its dulcatory way, while Medley wanted any bored young man's fashion, why on Earth did he not get up and go once? There were really several reasons. One was that the wind and the rain were continuously making themselves hurt outside. with nothing special to do."

His children, John and Winnie, are sent to bed early for misbehaving, but their evening is interrupted by a surprise visit from Mister Marvel's long-lost nephew from Melbourne. It is revealed that his mother, Mister Marvel's sister, Winnie, has recently died. Despite feeling annoyed by his nephew's interruption, Mister Marvel strives to show hospitality and kindness to the stranger.

Jim' has come to visit his relatives, Mister and Missus Marble, and their two children, Winnie and John. Mister Marvel, impressed with the young man's newly acquired wealth, is eager to learn of Jim's journey and his family's business. Jim explains that he has come from Melbourne University and had just arrived in London, where he cashed his letter of credit and found a hotel. He was given a parting gift, a leather case with pockets for money and visiting cards, which Mister Marvel immediately notices. The conversation then shifts to other topics, such as the children and Mister Marvel's fear of debt collectors.

The mystery case file of Mr. Marble. The story of a vapid bank clerk who descended to murder for the sake of a bankroll and immediate security, and who spent the rest of his life guarding the secret burial spot in the dingy city backyard, while his family ran riot on the money he more or less accidentally made on a fluke. The interest lies more in the development of the relations of the man to his downtrodden wife, his son, and his daughter; in the aftermath of the murder. When eventually he is arrested for a murder he did not commit, the title is explained.
