The entire load that is lifted by the crane is first borne by the wire rope that lifts the hook block. The wire ropes in any crane are always working in severe working conditions of tension, abrasion, friction and bending. There are different types of wire ropes that are used in cranes and they differ in the material, construction, diameters and lays. Almost invariably these wire ropes are exposed to severe atmospheric conditions.

Hence due care must be taken while using these wire ropes. Traditionally the wire rope is visually inspected visually that makes such inspection very tedious and difficult. But now there are special devices that enable us to check the wire ropes that also detect the internal cuts of the strands thus helping us to decide whether or not to replace the wire rope.

We cannot stress enough on the importance of the load chart when working with any crane. This one document contains all the information that is necessary for safe operation of the crane at any site – such as the crane dimensions, various boom & jib configurations that can be used with the crane, the counterweight needed, the outrigger extent, the minimum ground load bearing capacity required, number of reevings required in the hook block, the maximum allowable wind speed and so on. 

But often it is also the most neglected thing by the crane users. Reading any crane’s load chart is a skill that all crane users must have.

SLI is a very important tool for the crane operator that assists him is safe operation of the crane. The SLI continuously monitors the operating status of the crane and displays the current operating radius and the maximum load the crane can lift at that point.

Proper use of the SLI eliminates the risk of guess work during lifting thus helping the crane operator to work with increased safety. With so many different types of cranes available understanding the functioning of SLI and its limitations is very important to ensure safety at sites.
